You look at the performance he's getting out of the team and individuals and it seems like he might be on to something.

This.

Everyone has a different opinion on how things are done...there isn’t a coach in this world that’ll think the exact same way as you. There are plenty of right and wrong ways to do things.

So if your team is winning and getting results then stop (frank)ing complaining because it isn’t changing.

Yeah and guys like Rielly and Kadri are reaching new levels under him. Guys that came into the league under hin like the big three kids, Kap, are hitting their upside and then some. Freaking Tavares signed on to the Babs program. I'm okay with it.

Leafs have least power plays and least penalties? I think it is linked.

They don't take many penalties, and the refs always seem to like to even up pp chances somewhat even when it's not really deserved.

So if one team isn't taking any penalties, they don't feel the need to give them many power plays that aren't obvious.

I can appreciate that. An off goaltending night can see some of those low danger chances going in though.

To paraphrase and somewhat distort what Wayne Gretzky once said,

You save 100% of the shots that don't happen

- TheMussel

I'm still not sold that a top-pairing defenseman really changes enough about the way the Leafs play. It's not that different from the Carlyle leafs. The team is built on speed and utilizing the stretch pass to its advantage.

When the stretch pass is picked off - and invariably it will be - the other team returns in numbers.

Because this Leaf team is more skilled and faster than teams in the past, they are able to quickly recover and minimize the quality of the chance against, but it will typically result in D-Zone time, and a shot or two, whether it's a dangerous opportunity or not.

Their D-Zone coverage is also very passive, attempting to reduce high danger slot opportunities (not that they don't happen).

If you inserted - let's just say - Doughty into that system . . . he maybe completes more stretch passes, but still has a lot of giveaways because the system causes it. He is maybe better at helping to break the cycle down low, but it's still going to happen.

Ironically, because the Leafs are based on forward movement and speed, having Nylander back could be better for this team's style than any defenseman they'd likely be able to acquire.

Nylander and Matthews with their ability to control the puck will help our defense.

However, I disagree with you, I still think we need to add a defenseman. We don't need a Doughty or a big name guy, but I think a guy like Brett Pesce would be really good here. Even if all it does is move Hainsey down to the 3rd pairing.

6th highest shots against though

Not to go all UG, but I think they'll start getting burned more giving up that many shots as teams settle in after new years

An upgrade on D would be nice....

Or to have Matthews and Nylander back and crush o-zone possession to take the pressure of the D

- TheMussel

Honestly, just the simple move of rearranging the defence would help a lot.

Rielly - Dermott
Gards - Oz
Hainous - Zaitsev

While you're at it, let's find someone to take Z's contract

That's very fair. I'm not going to argue with any logic that moves Hainsey down or out.
