Y'all see the piece where Kucherov said he'd probably do the same thing if he was in Nylander's situation?

He raised a good point. When he signed his bridge deal with Tampa, it was because that was all the cap space they had. They literally could not sign him without trading one of his teammates.

Says Nylander has to make sure he gets his money now if he's staying in Toronto, because if he signs a short term deal for a small cap hit, there's no guarantees that there will still be any money left for him after Marner, Matthews, etc. get their deals.

Also, for the team in the room and the fans it's all about winning the cup. But Nylander's paycheck doesn't come out of Dubas' pocket. It comes out of Bell and Rogers' pocket. I can almost certainly guarantee you that they are more concerned with the bottom line than winning the cup, and ultimately Dubas and Shanahan represent them in this negotiation.

The idea that he's not a team player because he doesn't want to take less money than what he's asking for is very presumptive, I think.

Based on what do you get this idea? They are #1 in operational budgets and routinely eat contracts to save cap room. They also spend to the cap max when needed.

Make no mistake, a cup run represents an embarrassment of financial riches for the Leafs.

15 years ago I was reading they were making 1 million per playoff game in pure profit. It's likely double today.

And Nylander, as a driving force of that profit over the last couple of years wants a piece of the pie.

Standing up for oneself is seen as a virtue until it's not convenient.

Leaf ownership is not cheap. They are spending a ton to make the organization better.

I never said they were cheap (when it comes to hockey, they're scum when it comes to telecommunications)

They are, however, concerned with profit

True.
But he dropped his agent right after signing his long term deal....maybe he had regret?

Dunno.

He could be standing up for himself, or he could be a whiny, arrogant brat.

We don't know for sure, but as this drags on the latter seems to be true. If his agent can't make him money outside of the Leafs organization in this hockey mad city then he needs a better agent.

I seem to remember reading that Kucherov signed the bridge deal begrudgingly, and then a couple of years later he complained about how the guys making big bucks were doing poop all while he was putting the team on his back.
