I don't see how this makes anything better. Q was working with what he was given. The problem is higher up than coaching. - GalacticStone
Bowman have less worth issues, because of his successful dad. |

C'mon people...who didn't see this coming? They are doing a soft rebuild, unless they start to suck, then it's going to be a full rebuild. They have a ton of players on the verge of cracking the NHL roster (no judgment on how good they will be at that level) and a young coach who knows those players.
Q is not the best coach for youngsters in general. Colliton knows the players. The PP and PK have struggled for years. It was just time. And full disclosure, I will always love Q and the stache. He is on the Mt Rushmore of Chicago coaches and I hope he will come back to the organization some day. |

IMO this is a knee jerk reaction by McDonough who doesn't know much about hockey. He knows that the team has lost 5 games in a row but not much else. I don't think that he knew much about baseball either. His skill set is making money.
If you look at the Hawks attendance, they're not selling out this year. Else why would Eddie O read "Any seat, any price any game" four times a broadcast? That puts the fear of god in McD. Stan B can easily pass the buck to Coach Q (do do runs down hill). And McD would believe him.
The more reasonable reaction might have been to replace Dineen with Colliton. I like Kev but I think the young kids on offense and the need for speed just was a little beyond him. The Power Play (or lack thereof) was his undoing.
The guy I feel for is Ulf Samulson. He had to clean up the mess that Kitchen left and then get a squad of kids, retreads and aging stars.
My biggest fear is that this all goes in the toilet and the Hawks put a good coach with a lot of potential in a position where he can only fail.

New voice was needed, I get it.
But Bowman needs to go if they are in rebuild mode....
Which they are. |

I have more questions than answers with this Joel Quenneville news.
I will have a blog up later today on my thoughts.
One thing is for certain that he will not be long without a job. If he wants a little time off, maybe he heads to Seattle to be their 1st ever coach.
I didn't think Jeremy Colliton was ready just yet, but knew the #blackhawks liked him a lot.
I just hope they are not Trent Yawney-ing him.

Joel Quennville was fired 2 minutes ago. Hextall should have fired Hakstol and hired Quennville 1 minute and 59 seconds ago I completely agree - pucks4all

So I knew Stan was a piece of poop a few years ago when Nashville beat them in four and he comes out in front of the cameras with not a word of congratulations for the Preds, a great team, and instead begins to berate a team of players who've exhausted themselves over the last 6 years with three cups and a conference final appearance. I said to myself, that guy is toxic. He's the problem. I hope they fire him soon. |

Yeah It’s Quenneville’s fault they suck bc he signed Kunitz, Manning, Rutta, Ward, and Gustafson, traded Panarin, traded Hjallmarsson, reacquired Kruger and gave Seabrook $7mil until he’s 56 years old...oh wait, that was Stan Bowman.
Fire Stan Bowman!! - EnzoD
I feel happy for Q - he doesn't have to put up with Stan's crap any longer. The roster is on Bowman - overpaying the core and giving them all NMCs and his trade track record speaks for itself - its lousy.
The last two offseasons which you mention here are just a continuation of bad management by Stan. If we look back to the summer of 14 where he held his cards too long on Leddy and then the following summer he did the same with Sharp. Bowman knew at the parade in 15 he needed a 4d - his first move that summer to re-sign David Rundblad. Then at the trade deadline he gives away a promising young center in Danault to the Habs for hot garbage. And in the Blues series that spring the Hawks defense was a trainwreck.
The Hammer and Panarin moves have both been brutal at best. And we see the moves made by Bowman this last offseason...Kunitz, Manning, Ward...and of course Ward with a full NMC.
How mgt. can't see the real problem with this team is ridiculous. While it certainly may have been time for a fresh voice in the room and a new system on the PP the fact that Stan is still running the team is pathetic. Still I wouldn't expect Stan to be going anywhere because McD still has his mancrush on his daddy. |

You would have to just transfer ownership of the team to him, I think. |

Q is the scapegoat for an arrogant front office team that has:
1. Failed to draft and develop anything but middling to bottom level talent in the last eight years.
2. Committed the team to a roster and style of play completely devoid of anything resembling physical play, making them the softest team in the NHL.
3. Cap constrained to the tune of seven guys (six of which have NMC/NTC clauses) eating up over 60% of their cap space, leaving only $30MM to spread over fifteen more roster spots.
4. Leaves the on ice coaching staff with aging vets not in alignment with their cap expenditure, over the hill league minimum guys, and AHL wanna bes making up the rest of the roster.
Q played the hand he was dealt and now bears the brunt of the pressure that should be at minimum shared by that entire front office.
The next chapter is one where a 33 year old AHL coach, not allowed to pick his own assistants, inherits a team on the Titanic that lacks the talent to be a factor in playoff contention let alone any hope of a Cup run.
Thank you Joel Quenneville for a marvelous run. Just like Patton in WWII - no more gas, no more ground gain. |

John shannon said it best with Bob with dark glasses on Sportsnet. His sources. Hawks were in quagmire. Q and bowman and McBobblehead. ". He was relieved and could not wait to get out. " that smile in Calgary and the brain whiff on. 5 minute major, may have been ominous. I have. Q autograph on a stick, he is pure class.

Long time 'Hawk fan here (40+ years), though I haven't posted at Hockeybuzz in a long time. If Shannon is right, then good for Joel. I would have loved to see Q continue for a long time and let the players come and go--which is about what was happening anyway, right? Patrick Sharp was interesting on NBCSportsNetwork tonight though-said he and others were sad, but also seemed to support the move???
Anyway, bummer for the Blackhawks. Like with Ditka, I guess it had to end. |
