Well said sir, and this applies to GM's as well.

Look forward to the next wave of Craig Hartsburg, Dirk Graham, Lorne Molleken, Pully, Alpo, Brian Sutter, Yawney, Savard....the same list of clowns it took between actual coaches Darryl Sutter and Q

First idiot up..Colliton. Only 6 more coaches and 13 more years to go to get it right again!

- PatShart

I have the same worry you do, but I think you gotta give Colliton a chance to steer the ship before he is grouped with some of those failed coaches.

They must be going full rebuild why else would they bring in a rookie coach. Is he going to be the Hawks version of Ricky Renteria.

True
Q's resume was built on his time with the Hawks as he took over a loaded roster not by his time on other teams. If he goes to another team, he will pick his spot carefully. If he is as great as some suggest, let him pick a project like Ottawa and prove it.

- 67hawks

Joel Quenneville had not had a single season with a record under .500 until he joined the Hawks.

His record was 438-283-77-41. He had only ever missed the playoffs once (in a season where his Avalanche accumulated 95 points).

In 9 playoff appearances, only 3 of those times did the team get knocked out in round #1.

Even this season he was fired with a .500 record.

After the bull crap that just went on with the Ottawa players, do you think Stan has the stones to shake it up and make a multiplayer trade with Ottawa possibly for Matt Duchenne and that kid stone? Among others, even if it cost us a player like Brandon Saad and your precious Nick Schmaltz?

After the way this road trip went and once the Kings fired their coach, I told my buddy yesterday that I thought Q very well could be the next one to go...that didn't take long.

We may be in for a bumpy ride while the team adjusts. I know some folks around here were hoping for his for some time. I guess we'll get to find out how the team responds long term. I really hope we don't go down the rabbit hole of coaches again like we did for so many years before Q.

Not surprised to see Smith in there as I think he is a lot of history with Scotty Bowman.

- breadbag

The coaches coming and going you speak of was under Dollar Bill, guys who understood they would be given nothing but took the job just to be an NHL head coach. .......... Never say never but under Rocky hard to believe this would happen again.

Q was not THE problem, but he was A problem. Stan is not THE problem, but A problem. The players are not THE problem but A problem.

For the last three years, we have seen this team play exactly the same way and they got the results you would expect. Poor PK, PP, and defense (i.e. poor shot suppression) have been trademarks for a long time. That is on Q. If you don't have the players to run your system, you alter the system (there is no other option).

Stan has mismanaged several contracts and trades. I will give him credit where it is due (finding Panarin and such), but he has been late to the party several times and come up woefully short in finding replacements to high caliber players.

The players are the ones responsible for their actions on the ice. Q and Stan can't ensure the forward covers for the pinching D or takes a shot when they are 10 feet out in the slot. Q can yell about it, and Stan can try to find "responsible" players, but they have to do it on the ice.

I hope I am wrong, but I don't think giving Colliton interim coach was a great idea. I get the feeling that they are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with him. If he falters the rest of this year, then what? you send him back down to Rockford? Insert Granato, or one of the available coaches and let the rest of this season play out.

- Chunk

I haven't heard this mentioned in anything I've heard so far this AM. Every statement so far that I've heard has simply stated that he will be the new head coach. Period. Anyone else know if this is intended to be interim status ?

Good post, Colliton should not be the replacement this year, maybe next
year and a fresh beginning for all I think it shows that SB is on the clock
without much time which hopefully doesnt lead to bad trades/signings

I'm sorry, I can't let this go. You've said on a number of occasions that the league "gifted" Vegas a good team with the draft rules. Now you are saying that they were "bad players" and the coach got everything out of them. You can't have it both ways.

Not to mention, you are now implying that Gallant can do great things with inferior talent. Where were those great things in Cbus or Florida?

I'm not debating about the move to dump Q, because I think he was a notable part of the problem, but please be consistent in your arguments.

- Chunk

No, I am playing devil's advocate. It's not me who says the team earned what they got, but most everyone else said that Gallant did an outstanding job of coaching a group of misfits. Since I am in the minority, then maybe everyone is correct and Gallant is a better "coach" than Q. You can't always blame the players.

Duchene is a good player, but honestly kind of seems like an bumhole. 'I haven't paid attention in like 3 weeks' coupled with his trade request, and the fact that he goes from worst team in the league to helping another team become worst in the league... doesn't look good. He's going to want his payday after this year, and there are far better #1 centers in the league. He just seems like a spoiled brat after the last two years.

So...Stan is an idiot...cant draft, make solid trades, or sign good contracts

Why am I to believe this 33yr old coach is going to be good? He has 0 experience, but is somehow going to have the locker room command, the refs, the bench during games or out matchup lines versus other teams? Based on he coached in Sweden and Stan likes him? Please

They better move Crawford this year and get something for him...and soon. Before he gets hurt again which happens every Christmas when eggnog is back in season

Yes, and as I've said for a few yrs now this all falls to Rocky. He's the one that ultimately hires the people who make the decisions on which GM's and coaches to hire/fire and more importantly when.

Get the right people in at the right time and move them out when their area of expertise has expired.

Hahah what a joke. (frank) Stan Bowman. It’s Quenneville’s fault they suck bc he signed Kunitz, Manning, Rutta, Ward, and Gustafson, traded Panarin, traded Hjallmarsson, reacquired Kruger and gave Seabrook $7mil until he’s 56 years old.

Sad day in Chicago. My dog is named Q. Thanks for the memories Q.

Again, (frank) Stan Bowman.

Why can't people understand that coaches can be great in certain situations but not in others.

Some coaches are great at building / rebuilding teams into competitors - but can't get them over the top to a championship.

Others are great at taking quality teams and getting them to the next (championship) level. Phil Jackson.

I would guess that there are very few who could do both.

You guys got your wish. The second winningest coach in NHL history was fired by the Hawks.

I don’t like it one bit.

Q was not the problem. If Bowman, Ulf, Dineen and others in the front office aren’t removed, too, that’s weak.

Q Is falling on the sword for all the Hawks’ issues? C’mon. Guess you can’t fire players, so the coach always gets the axe...lame.

- Hank3Henshaw

You obviously do not understand the concept of “falling on the sword.” He was fired. As I have said before, that it is possible to fairly criticize Bowman too doesn’t absolve Q. Q was the problem! Bowman has nothing to do with an awful PP, an awful PK, an idiotic “Defensive System”, terrible line combinations and terrible D-Man combinations. Pretty sure Bowman also had absolutely nothing to do with the Hawks killing a 7 minute penalty on Saturday.

Now what Bowman is clearly culpable for are many poor signings and poor trades.

Hopefully the management and coaching teams will be on the same page now when it comes to trades and signings. And maybe there will be more sense in the purpose of these transactions and the direction the team is heading.

Bowman never built anything, he did very well maintaining what was there when he took over as GM, and filling in around it. In all his time as GM he has never been able to add a core piece. Crow, Toews, Kane, Sharp, Hossa, Seabs, Keith all were here already when he took over.

The best player he added was Panarin. But he didn't add Panarin. Barry Smith did. He had coached in Russia and had contacts there, went over and spoke with Panarin and convinced him to sign with the Hawks. Giving Stan credit for Panarin is like giving me credit for the stock market run because I live in the USA. Stan did great subtracting Panarin, a true superstar, from the team though, to get a guy with the exact same salary as Panarin for two years. Cost certainty? Cost equality. There was no reason to move the guy for two more years.

The best player Stan has brought to the Hawks was probably Teuvo and he gave him away to get rid of Bickell's contract which Stan gave to him.

Not saying Q was perfect. He wasn't. The team has been on a decline since the St Louis first round 7 game loss. But Stan has done more to accelerate that decline than anyone.

- hereismike1

Yeah...I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. It is true, all the Core pieces were collected when Dale was GM and Stan was an Asst. GM.

Stan did re-build the depth around that Core. But I would ask, and what often seems to get lost in this place, in a Salary Cap world, when you've got 7 Core pieces (you forgot Hammer), can you actually add anymore to that?

It's a hard cap. I'm not sure you can add anymore all stars. Also, for all the people who characterize Stan as timid, afraid of his own shadow, etc., when you have those 7 guys, what bold moves are you supposed to make? I think most of us would thank are lucky stars that Stan took over and didn't Chiarelli things up, resisting the urge to trade, Kane, Keith, Crow, etc. after 2 first round exits just to put his stamp on this thing...which according to most is bad.

I think Q was/is the scapegoat for a poor roster. And, that blame goes entirely on Bowman.

Some fans over value the team's players. Your GM should NEVER do this.

Look at the bottom six of the Blackhawks. If you swapped the Hawk bottom six and the Rockford bottom six, would there be any appreciable difference in the won/loss record?

The top six has ONE legit superstar--Kane. Toews, even with a good start to this season, is still a shell of his former self. Saad is a total mystery. Schmaltz is a figure skater, not a hockey player. Kahun is a nice player, but probably shouldn't be on the top line. Probably more suited to a third liner. The Cat is a legit good player.

Look at the blue line. You have MAYBE 3 serviceable defensemen. Joki, Keith and possibly Seabrook. The other 3 are barely NHL quality Dmen.

I see where Barry Smith (YECH) is now gonna be behind the bench as an assistant... To me, that's NOT an upgrade.
