Yea this. Why is Saad getting blown up here?
- kwolf68

Because, at least in my opinion, Saad made the initial bad play which led to Kane's bad play which led the Gustafsson's bad play. None of the 3 Hawks made the right play - starting with Saad.

Darth, I think Schmaltz made a great leap tonight. I think it's 45 games to go, I don't know, I've been slacking in that sense.

I have to preface this by saying I only watched about 8 minutes in the 3rd period. But with 3 or 4 minutes left in the game I saw Schmaltz bail out twice on the same shift. Maybe that's just the new NHL.

Is it time to explore breaking up the 1st line? DeBrincat, Toews and Kahun, as a group, have 2 goals in the last 7 games - after getting 12 goals in the first 5 games. And if you're going to break up the Toews line - then for crying out loud put DCat with Kane and watch the pucks going into the net. Saad has played better as of late but he isn't the finisher that's going to thrive playing with Kane. Give the Saad-Toews combo another try. And get a 3rd line with another offensive player - namely Sikura. Luke Johnson has grown on me these past few games but he is a 4th liner. Have him be one of the 4th line rotation with Kampf, Kruger and Hayden.

Saad-Toews-Kahun
DCat-Anisimov-Kane
Fortin-Schmaltz-Sikura
Johnson-Kruger-Kampf-Hayden

Bye bye Kunitz and Martinsen.

Beat me to it.

At least the Hawks are a lot more fun to watch this year, compared to last.

Because Saad made a poor decision. He was on his backhand and being driven away from the net with a zero chance of scoring there. Heck Saad has one goal from an in the paint rebound and the other was an empty netter.
No way does he belong on the ice in OT because he has NO HANDS to control posession. The only forwards that should see the ice in OT is Toews, ADB,
Kane and Schmaltz. No Saad- No control, No Anisimov - too slow. There's your top 6 forwards on this team and only 4 give you a legitimate chance in 3 on 3.

Martinsen is getting playing time as a reward for effort and banging a few bodies. He's no world beater but it's telling where Hayden is by comparison in the eyes of the coaching staff.

Jokiharju is very impressive. 19 years old? Wow. He generally is in the right place and has high skill ability. He's a legit Calder Trophy candidate.

He single handedly shut down Mc David many times. Very very impressive!! Introduce his strength coach to Bovquist

I saw the same. He actually jumped back on that one play? Notice that?

Go hawks go. Holy jumpins. Certainly a Newfoundland saying. I'm sure it was in Bob Coles vocabulary from Hockey Night in Canada. I'm sure Don Cherry has another even more colorful one.

Saad is getting blown up because he did absolutely nothing on that play. I am a Saad fan but in OT if you find your path to the net is taken away and you can’t get a good shot to potentially win the game you must back off, keep clear possession and re-start. Looked initially like there might be something - there wasn’t - in OT re-start. Also in OT you have to really keep track of who is on the ice and where they are. Kane had drifted down backing Saad but he needed a change. Forget involving Kane at all - keep the puck or get it back to Gus.

Speaking of Gus he has no idea how to play defence. Draisatl had done nothing all game - pressure him. He had to do something - backing in and making a late slide that totally took him AWAY from the puck is nothing. Same as if no D-Man at all. At some point Gus is going to be in the cross-hairs. He needs to be able to play both ends of the ice and he simply doesn’t seem to be able to.

Yeah maybe we should just give him to the Capitals.
