No mention of goalie equipment adjustments mainly smaller chest protectors... That's the trend. You give the skilled players 1/2" or more and they will and have exploited it thus far.

Just curious, what happened to your plans for the review of each team Ek? Seems like you did less than 10, then the season started.

The goals will go down like always. Coaches don't like exciting, end to end hockey. They like boring, strict system, safe hockey. Get that 2-1 lead early in the 3rd and sit back and try and run the clock.

I think the game you're thinking of might be 2010 Stanley Cup Final Game 1 Chicago Blackhawks beat your Flyers 6-5. Was a crazy fun game.

That would be 23 seasons ago. Lemieux and Jagr, 69 and 62 goals.

Personally, I like the 3-2 games with defense.

Gretzky Anderson and Kurri all scored over 50 in 83/84. And Coffey had 40! And Messier was a bum, only 37.

They did it again in 85/86. Coffey had 48 that year!

The game you're thinking about is the game between the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers on February 19, 2008. Habs were down 5-0 and came back to win 6-5 on a shootout goal from Saku Koivu.

Oh yeah? Each team is getting 50 goals a game eh? I think that might be a bit of a stretch. Goalie equipment shrunk, there's an adjustment period going on here, as someone above said, the coaches will adjust.

I don't think elimination of the two line pass would have given Gretzky that much of a bump.. it's something that has given defensemen more a a point bump on secondary assists. In the 80s they had to skate it to their blue line (or beyond, Pail Coffey). Gretzky worked his magic because of his speed and puck control, not because of a modified dump and chase.

Could it be the constant goalie equipment changes? If that’s the case, that goalies really have a disadvantage this year, that sucks for the teams that rely on defense over offense.

From the 4 games I've watched so far, I think that's 100% what it is. There's a lot going in under the goalies arms so far, right in the area where padding was shaved off. Exciting last shot wins hockey is back.
