I am thankful that John Hayden made it into the lineup It looks like he had a pretty good game, I don’t know how you guys feel but I think he should be given a chance to possibly play in the top six, or at least be a permanent dress every game and not rotated in and out of the lineup. I don’t mind Martinson but Hayden definitely stands out more than him.
Well, I have to admit when I’m wrong, which is many times it seems, when it comes to this team, as much as I am a Bowman critic at times, three defenseman he drafted in the last two years are going to be huge. I really liked number 28. At the same time I think Brandon Manning and Brandon Davidson should be given a chance also. When everybody is healthy I will be just fine not having to watch number 44, or for that matter number 56, those two signings are the ones that I question Bowman about given the contracts he gave both of them last year. I think Murphy, Forsling, Will replace both of them. When they are healthy. Looks like we are going to have a very nice problem on that Back end,Ice time for all of them, which hopefully will be sooner than later. Back to Hayden I like that number 24 playing with the captain, but I also would like to see Hayden get a shot up there also. - wonthecup10
Does Hayden have balance in his skating as an issue? |

As much as I rag on Gustafsson's mediocre defense, he is rather effective at defending when he does apply himself. There was a play against the Leafs where he rode the puck handler into the end boards and used sheer strength and physicality to create a turnover. More of that, please, to go along with his top notch offense. - AEL_Fox
Not so sure about Gus's defending qualities (or lack of). Yes he did have a nice rub off with good technique and angle. However, like I have stated before, Gus finds himself on the wrong side of the puck too many times, from neutral zone on back. Now back to his wanting to play D and/or knowing how. At best he should use his God-gifted D man Swedish skating ability along with an active stick, to at least be a nuisance and not give up any gimmies like very poor man's version of Lidstrom, operative words are very poor man's.
Possible solutions: being smarter when to "activate"; he is one of the best in the league at opening up weak-side, whether in D and/or neutral zone, as 3 or 4 man in. His chemistry with Kane is awesome as they have that telepathy feel much like Panarin had with Kane. However, you had better of defensive D and a great 3F, which currently you have neither in Schmaltz and Saad as their speed dictates they are up ice and deep in O zone. Or stay the course and weigh the risk/reward ratio.

I believe that Q singled Gus out for being out of position on the GWG which also turned out to be the series winning goal. In any case he was 23 at the time with only 41 NHL games under his belt. - -Doh-
Yes if my memory served me correctly which is fading fast, it was Gus in mid ice on the boards where he either misplayed or coughed up the puck leading to the Blues winning goal and series. I think it may have been game 7. |

Yes good skating = agility + core
His skating is to rigid and upright; thus rending his core as less effective; yes he is 6'3" but so is Ovie. That is why gets knocked off the puck easily for a big guy. Pay attention to his stop and starts and/or tight turns (only seen clockwise tight turns so far. As a righty assuming right footed, tight turns counter clockwise should be easier.
That said, he should be in the bottom 6, likely 3rd line because he does have a good shot and can snipe. And I stated before, either Hayden plays himself up to a top 6 or back to the Hogs or game day scratches. He might be their best bottom 6 goal scorer now.

I wish I had the answer for you, maybe you want to ask one of the sharpshooters on this website and follow in a lot closer than I do. I never really paid attention to it but maybe so.
Edit:Just saw that the poster before me answer your question. I’ll have to pay more attention to that I never really noticed it. |

I know you're just relaying what you read, but you made my day. I always wanted him with Kane. |

I like Fortin with Kane too. But this should be interesting. If you are bringing him up, you have to play him. So who sits? Kunitz, Hayden, Kampf, Johnson?

I’d guess Johnson as he’s taken a few penalties and not done much otherwise

Kunitz please. Hayden needs 3rd line mins. Kampf can play with Kruger and Johnson. |

I'm on the fence about Johnson. He hasn't done much to benefit the team. I specifically remember him taking a good penalty on defense breakdown, and one penalty that reeked of referee bull crap. |

Fortin is a product of the Hawks marketing machine. He’s over-hyped and Fortin will be back in Rockford within a week. |

With Fortin recalled, I would roll him with Anisimov to provide the 3rd line with some disruptive speed so that Anisimov can do what he does best at creating space by driving the net and parking in the slot. They are still lacking a playmaker, though.
I know he may not be ready yet and need more games in the AHL, but ideally I would like Sikura playing with Anisimov and either Highmore or Fortin. Sikura would be the playmaker for them. Plus they'd see lower QOC as far as defensive matchups.
For now:
Fortin - Anisimov - Hayden
Johnson - Kruger - Kampf
Kunitz
Ideally later in the season:
Fortin - Anisimov - Sikura
Hayden - Kruger - Kampf
Highmore
(get Hayden to his off wing) |

Like both sets of lines.
You're doing ahl recaps here and there, right? I appreciate your work and observations, if I got my people right. I'm trying to learn/remember. Is Fortin playing on the same line as Sikura? It would be nice if that chemistry in the ahl is kept in the nhl. |

Sarcasm aside, I don’t have any expectations of Fortin - good or bad. Fortin is fast, but so was Stalberg. I’ll take the ‘wait and see’ approach with Fortin as I would have rather seen Highmore or Sikura get the call. |

I'm excited for Fortin because he's like Hino in his speed, but finishing/playmaking abilities ???? your guess is as good as mine. That's why I want him to have a chance. He got less of a look than the other 2 you named. Sikura NEEDS Rock. Highmore, I liked his game a lot, I know what he brings and am excited for him. Fortin is an experiment that I don't see being a permanent fixture either. |

Scott Powers said Joki is running the PP Unit 1 with Adb, Kane, Schmaltz, and Toews. Gus and Keith are running the PP Unit 2 with Kahun, Arty, and Saad. The 2 dmen I want on the PP and the one guy I dont. I think Kahun and Schmaltz should be swaped. That top line should play together and Saad and Schmaltz should keep their chemistry also. |
