My immediate reaction is 20 games is too much. I thought the suspension for breaking zach aston-reese's face was a clean hit and while this was predatory, I think the headshot wasn't targeted, I honestly believe he was trying to blow through the body, but that is charging and should be ten games. Give another 10 for the head as principle part of contact and voila, there's your 20 games. My suspicion is it gets reduced to 15 games, but yeah, big blow to the caps

Most of his salary is signing bonus, so absolutely no message sent. He forfeits no $ and before you say well he wont play, he dont care about that otherwise he wouldn't be such a douchebag.

He gets to sit at home with his new millions.

He still has to pay the fine though.

Hope it was worth it. A hit on a 3rd/ 4th line guy in preseason.

Now you get to play the rest of the season with a bullseye on your back. One questionable hit and he's done for the year. Going to get the Raffi Torres treatment real quick.

Blues are pissed but likely better off giving that time to the kids anyway.

I believe he has to pay based on his whole net ($6.1M), not just on his base salary ($1.1M).
- jmatchett383

This from nhl.com:
"Wilson is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, will forfeit $1,260,162.60. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund."
- hopefully that's accurate...!

So, three suspensions in the last season, and this PREseason, he doesn't even wait for the real thing to begin to hit someone blindside from behind right on the head? 20 is a show of clemency, if you ask me! He has no reason whatsoever for this hit, the player could not, in any way, shape or form know he was coming for him and protect himself. If I was the league, half the season is the minimum. And I might have gone for the whole thing and just waited for him to appeal. A case could be made that he is a danger and he needs a very extreme suspension, and even if the decision is reversed, he'll still lose a poopload of games.

Tom Wilson will forfeit an astounding $1,260,162.20 in salary as a result of his 20-game suspension. Pending an inevitable appeal, of course.

Fines are based on AAV. It doesn’t matter how much is salary vs bonus. Fine would be the same no matter how his income is broken down, bonus vs salary.

On Wilson suspension... Here’s a statement provided to me from the NHLPA:
“The NHLPA is reviewing the supplemental discipline decision and will be discussing it further with the player.”

NHL Dept of Safety comment on Mr Wilson

“an unprecedented frequency of suspensions in the history of the league’s Department of Player Safety.”

In last two season Wilson will have missed 24 games related to preseason incidents.

Good suspension. He deserved it and it hits his new large pocket book. I like Tom Wilson as a player besides the dirty hits. He doesn’t need to lay our defenseless players to play his game. However, my question in This instance is I wonder if anyone on his own team said anything to him this time? He is a first line forward they need to repeat this year and now he will be out of the lineup for 20 games just so he could take a cheap shot during preseason.

His team mates are just glad he hasn't head shot them yet. The organization knew what they were paying the 35 point player for.

For those of you old enough to remember, the Rangers had a guy named Tomas Sandström who was dirty and cheap. So Tie Domi, playing for the Leafs at the time, took off his right glove and coldcocked his as he skated by. Dude was out before he hit the ice. That’s the way to deal with players who do poop like that!!👍

To be fair, Domi also did pretty much the same thing to Scott Niedermayer totally unprovoked.

Pretty sure you mean Ulf Samuelsson and not Tomas Sandstrom. And it wasn’t as he skated by. They were both in front of the goalie and he turned around and sucker punched him and knocked him out cold.
