Overall, ugghhh. I know its preseason, but there seems to be no urgency from most of the roster to claim a spot in the roster, as if they were coasting and let the chips fall where they may. Also thought Johansson was pretty invisible, and he is someone that if we are going to have any chance this year needs to perform.

so.. Smith > Mueller, Gryba, Lovejoy, Yakovlev..

Leaving, Vatanen, Greene, Butcher, Severson, Santini.. and Smith. He's just plain better than those 4 other candidates. Carry Mueller or Lovejoy as the 7th, but Smith should be getting priority in starts. Scratch him if he needs to watch or gets tired, but the kid is good. what a steal.

I think we’ve got to give Smith his 9-games or whatever it is. I don’t really how we can justify starting anybody else over him.

Like Todd said, pretty underwhelming play by the all the lines (with the exception of the top line) but I thought Bratt had a pretty good game

I’m just about ready to proclaim Q, Lappin and McLeod as busts. I know they’re all young as hell but, I just don’t see anything that gives me hope of them being anything more. I hope I’m wrong.

Q is 22 and needs to show something or I'll continue to insist we should have taken Brendan Lemieux. Lemieux might not be much better but is entertaining as (frank). Just like his dad.

Lappin is 25 so he's pretty much starting his prime. He's been productive in the AHL, but might not be NHL material. McLeod is just 20 and definitely deserves more time.

The team is not looking good this pre-season, but I want to stress it's only pre-season. As all the hockey analysts predicted, the defense and secondary scoring will be a problem this season. Who knows, it might change during the season.

I'm still amazed there are a bunch of Devil fans who are calling for Shero and Hynes to be fired for a winless pre-season (so far) and for not being pro-active with trades and free agent signings. Has Shero made some bad trades and questionable draft picks? Of course, but what GM hasn't done that. He's also made some great trades which everyone seemed to love:

1. His 1st big trade, Kyle Palmieri. It seemed to work out for everyone.

2. Traded for Adam Larsson for Taylor Hall. Devils got a superstar for at best a #2 defenseman.

3. Drafted Nico Hischier, though that was a given.

4. Found a diamond in the draft in the 2016 NHL draft. Still not sure what Bratt's ceiling, but he had a good 1st year for a 19-year-old 6th-round draft pick.

The fans that keep asking for Stevens to coach and Lou or Marty to GM just love to cling to the past. Yeah, they brought home 3 Cups but was the past. Inject new blood.

Look at Lou's track record at the end, he signed a bunch of forwards (Ryder, Cammalleri, Brunner, Havlat, etc.) who did not pan out. The draft picks who were supposed to at least be serviceable NHL players are fringe NHL players or out of the league (Josefson, Gelinas, Merrill, Boucher, Tedenby, etc.)

Shero is right to stay the course and not pursue FAs. The team is a playoff bubble team right now. Luck was on their side last year and they made it. Can they make the playoffs this year? Sure, but they're not Stanley Cup contenders.

Let's see what they have this year. Let the season determine if Zacha, Bratt, Severson, Santini and the other young players legit to build around. Please keep Ty Smith in Juniors and let him earn his spot next year. A year without Smith isn't going to make or break the team, but it can ruin his development.

Not making the playoffs this year is not the end of the world for this group. A quick reset and picking up another good 1st round draft pick will go a long way for this team. Shero just has to make sure he drafts a good player in the 1st round and 2nd round (and his decision making on this is debatable).

STAY THE COURSE THIS YEAR.

I'm only asking for Stevens to run the D because he has proven he can run a defense properly. He did a good job here in that capacity (and as co-head coach) and he did a good job in Minnesota as well. Not because he's from the past.

Shero doesn't pursue free agents because we are small market low payroll team. Which teams with FA signing are we finishing ahead of? Philly? Toronto? Buffalo?

Last year the Devils were bad 5v5 - that happens when you have this group of defensemen - but this year the Devils' special teams may not be as good as they were last year and that is going to hurt them out of the gate.

If Stone doesn't want to remain a Sen, then maybe we can send Q and Mcleod their way for him. The guy is unreal, and addresses our need on RW. I mean if they trade Karlsson for peanuts, I am sure Stone wouldn't take much more than those two "Prospects"

Stone would be a great fit on this team.

The pending UFA status is a bit concerning...

For sure. I just don't know if Q and Mcleod will develop into NHL'rs. If we wait till the offseason and try and sign him then, i'm happy. I hope to see a much more productive free agency next summer, as I do not have the highest hopes for our current prospect pool.

I actually agree that we should stay the course. I won't argue the Scott Stevens running the defense, because he did a great job while NJ. Now you say Shero doesn't pursue FA because we are a low market team. Please tell me who in this years FA was worth throwing high term and money at? JVR commanded 7mil per from Philly... No thank you especially if Hall, Butcher and Nico are coming up for raises. NJ fans just have to stay patient and trust what we have been seeing from Shero and Co. #Relentless # NoWERISE

Hall said he is looking forward to playing with Hischier again this season and hopes to find chemistry right away.

"He's bigger and stronger ... that's something I've noticed in training camp," Hall said. "He's a lot more mature on the ice. Last year as an 18-year-old, I don't think he got the credit he deserved for how good of a season he had (52 points; 20 goals, 32 assists). I'm looking forward to getting off to a good start and getting momentum right off the bat on a line with him. I think for Nico, going back to Europe and playing a game in front of his home country will be a good boost for him, and for all of us supporting him as well."

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE SOMEONE THAT WANTS OUT OF NJ?

I THINK NOT!

New Jersey has assigned forwards Joey Anderson, Michael McLeod and Marian Studenic to @BingDevils.

In addition, the club has placed forward Nick Lappin on waivers.

Not surprising seeing how McLeod has played. Didn't look ready at all.

62 points in 58 games is great, and when you combine it with his strong two way game, he is a true #1 RW. We would have a very good top 6 with him and Palms as our top RW's. But eh, I agree with the others about staying the course, and if we can pursue him or Douche in the offseason as UFA's, I'm thrilled. Still disappointed we didn't go ruffling feathers by offering 4.1M contracts with term to the RFA's. Either Nurse or Morrissey would have been huge additions for the cost of just our 2nd rd pick. Wish GM's would be more cut-throat when it comes to RFA's

Maybe, but if Q and Mcleod were an option for Stone, it would be a great deal for the Devs. Q and Mcleod are shaping up to be potential bottom 6 players, whereas Stone would play a much larger role. Sad how these 2 first rounders have turned out to date when you look at others in that draft. Hope for them to develop, but from what I have seen, I have low expectations.

Looks like it's down to JQ and Seney for the last forward spot on opening night, assuming Bratt makes it. I guess Stafford is still around but I'd be surprised (and annoyed) if he makes the team over a young guy.
