Now, this is true - hockey stats are not as valuable as they are in baseball. Hockey is just a way more variable sport. And not all stats are created equal - some provide better insight and some are mostly pointless. It's all about looking at as much info as possible, in context and conjunction with watching the games, to try to get the most clear picture.

I think grading shifts isn't all that different from what stats in hockey do, just at a more mirco level. I mean, how do you grade a shift? You look at the events in the shift to see if they did good or bad. Stats also track and then quantify those events (in shifts or games) and then looking at that data to see trends, positive and negative. As long as the sample size is large enough to shake out some of the variance, you can compare data from the different samples (season to season is the most common).

Some people can these events and naturally qualify them as good, bad, or somewhere in between. Others can kind of do this but like to look at stats to confirm or eliminate the natural bias we can human have (we're subjective creatures by nature). And still others just like to have as much info as possible regardless of whether they can assess naturally or not.

For me nothing beats the "eye" test with a pattern of consistency, rather than a one and done moment. I think the eye test will make you forge into the "advanced stats" more than the other way around. Before the advent of advanced stats, the eye test is all you had, the advanced scouts can attest to that. That said, there is a place for advanced stats especially scouting other teams when team scouts are less available. And for the record, I have absolutely no issues with your stats in any of these discussions LBR...it just is not for me!

Me too.
I think he included a no save clause in his contract instead of a no trade clause

IMO this has John McDonough and the marketing boys written all over it. "A glimpse of our future Hawks" or some marketing campaign like that.
- Rota's Rooter

I had a post about that. But McDonough cannot move some marketing too soon on the new kid in town. Because that town could turn out to be London, Ontario, Canada. Which might as well be Walla Walla, Washington when disgruntled season ticket holders stay away from there as well.

The mind is the first thing to go at his age. Does not bode well for his future behind the hawks bench.

He's flashing some good speed ... so yep, probably a goner. He couldnt even score when he's getting slashed, pathetic. Apparently when Dahlstrom played good d, that got him demoted as well.

Shakey start, especially by Ward, but they slowly took over the period and controlled the play. Ward made a heck of a save to end the period.

I have to say, AA looks like he is moving a lot better, maybe back to 2016 mobility, and that is a good thing. Seabrook definitely looks a bit more mobile as well.

I bet McDonough is watching more closely. Or MacIsaac would speak up. And I would wager that Q has to show that he can bring young kids along. Right. Not ready then not a Q favorite. Not such a bad thing for a coach, but not the coach of the Blackhawks .......
whom will introduce a whole new cast of kids over next five years.

Definitely a big stand-out with Highmore, looking good as a centre. Boq doesn't play big, he's playing smart though, give credit where it's due.
I wasn't a big Kahun-a fan at first, he had speed, but nothing stood out to me with him. The last game and this period, he's growing on me.
I hope I didn't jinx anyone.

Agree. Here’s an example, d zone face off, defensive RW covers his guy for 15 seconds, without O LW touching the puck. However, D CTR loses the draw, puck goes back to O LD, who shoots and scores. All the D players are going to get the same from an advanced stats perspective, even though the D RW did everything right, and would grade out an A or B.
