That is just not an accurate statement. He did have a good year outside of shooting %.
- fattybeef

How do you figure that? $6million Top 6 wingers are paid to put the puck in the back of the net and create goals via assist. His 35 points over 82 games is not good.
When you remove the first week of the season, his production is simply atrocious for a $6million dollar player. Regardless of how many shot attempts generated vs conceded, gotta produce offense to be labeled as a "good year" IMO.

It wasn't like officially stated but someone mentioned that Portland doesn't care and that Jokiharju would mess up their import numbers (I believe).

The other question is do either of them benefit more from being sent down, or staying in the NHL? I know this is mostly rhetorical, but anyone's thoughts?

I like to see young players spend time on the farm to learn how to handle adversity - which would be easier to do in Rockford than in Chicago.

Going several / many games without scoring - how do they learn how to handle it, adjust to it (by making sure they take care of the other parts of their games), learning how to get out of slumps before they become long term - getting the coaching staff help they need to deal with that....

Those things might be more easily accomplished in the "A" - where the coaching staff has more time and incentive to help young players with those issues - than in the Show - where winning becomes more important.

They used to say that a "kid" needed 1,500 at bats in the minors before moving up to the big leagues - times have changed, and maybe with the better coaching in amateur leagues nowadays - but I think the concept is still more true than not.

Boqvist for sure can benefit more from going to the OHL. He is highly talented, but he needs to pace his development and not rush to a level that is not ideal for his body maturity imo. I think Boqvist will be ready for the NHL faster than he originally thought, just like guys like Karlsson and Letang were, but fast is not now.

Jokiharju is a different case. I think he is beyond the OHL at this point, for sure, but it's difficult to say which of the NHL/AHL is best for him. It's very possible that he is strong enough in his fundamentals that what he really needs is to practice / participate in the NHL to hone them for that speed / skill level. If he is not fundamentally ready, then he should be in the AHL. In limited viewing, I think Jokiharju seems NHL ready, at least in that he could benefit the most from honing his play at that level. But that is a limited viewing.

I was thinking the same thing. I am starting to wonder if we might see 3 goalies until they give Forsberg some more chances to prove he belongs.
- breadbag

It will only be 3 goalies until Crawford returns, but that might not be until Nov/Dec.

Forsberg will get his shot at redemption though and there are some that think he could steal some games away from Ward.

I never heard LBR.

It looks like the Hawks are banking on Jokiharju being in Chicago or Rockford.

I think he starts in Chicago.

It sounds like it may be:

DeBrincat-Toews-Kahun
Schmaltz-Anisimov-Kane
Kunitz-Kampf-Saad
Ejdsell-Highmore-Fortin

ex: Martinsen-Sikura

Keith-Seabrook
Davidson-Rutta
Manning-Boqvist

ex: Gustafsson

... Don't quote me on that though.

- Justin Lowe

Johnson and Jokiharju aren't on your list but they're still in camp - correct?

I'm sure the front office is thrilled with his comments. looks like more problems on the horizon with that team and organization. Stan pick up the phone and call and offer to take that problem off their hands.
- BGKarras

I took that to mean it was a wakeup call to the players, not a criticism of the team.

Very possible.

I'm not sure what the rush is to get Boqvist into games. If he's destined to head back to the OHL... let Jokiharju get more time.

Hey... maybe Boqvist makes the team and flat out beats Jokiharju out.

- Justin Lowe

IMO this has John McDonough and the marketing boys written all over it. "A glimpse of our future Hawks" or some marketing campaign like that.

It seems to me that they want to give Highmore and Boqvist one more look...

I bet that 4th line tonight, and Boqvist get reassigned tomorrow.

Q said after the Ottawa game there's a good chance Boqvist plays all 3 preseason games this week.

Please no. Lucic gets $6M for 5 more years and he scored all of 10 goals in 82 games last season.

Anything can be misused and skewed to support someone's perspective. You could cherry pick games or videos in which a player or team is good or bad but we know that over a large enough sample is the only way to truly assess a player. It's the same way with stats - you look at a large enough sample, you can see trends and such. It's not going to tell you everything, but it might help you understand why the higher level numbers (goals/assists/wins) were what they were.

That's why I typically try to look at as many stats as I can, in context, and with video support. And if I cannot do all of those things, I try to caveat that I didn't get to watch as much or don't have enough context, whatever it may be. My favorite stats, personally, are what are sometimes (but not always) referred to as micro stats - things like passing, zone exits/entries, dump/chase, board battles, etc. These are obtained either through tracking projects where people just sit down and quantify events in hockey or from guys like Mike Kelly who uses a company that does this. So these stats are only gotten through watching the games (they are also typically peer-reviewed - I do this).

When I comment on Saad's underlying/advanced stats, the micro stats are the ones I'm talking about mostly. Quantifying actual shots and passes by type, distance, whatever; looking at how well/bad he transitioned (with the puck, without the puck); and seeing the situation of the players in doing these things should be helpful in getting a better picture of how he performed at an event level. And in these regards, he was good - better with shots (his shot contribution quality was high level) than passing (good but not elite), for example.

So you say you think he looked bad - I respect that because it's an opinion and everyone is entitled to those. I just don't agree - I thought he looked good. Which is why I wanted to know why, if he looked good to me, were his goal/assist down. And the best way for me to try to understand the why and how behind a drop in production is to look more closely at the other stats with context/video.

- L_B_R

Completely respect your viewpoint and in depth advanced stats. Very articulate responsive too! We can certainly disagree on how his on ice play looked to our untrained eyes.

Think we can both agree he needs to have a big year in order for the Hawks to do something this year.

I fully expect Sikura to be on the opening night roster. Maybe Q gives him a night off here and there at the beginning of the season but he'll be a regular contributor.

Boqvist is a nice story, but I see him back in London and Jokiharju in his place.

Gustafsson is probably the team's best offensive defenseman. Until somebody shows to be better at that role he plays every night. Manning or Davidson will serve as the 7th defenseman.

Speaking of defense.... thing will get interesting later in the season once Murphy and Forsling return. Forsling may spend some time in Rockford, but he'll be back up around the time Murphy is back.

Don't know about good. I figured Chiarelli would be the one guy some of the Stan haters would potentially rate below Bowman...but the Looch deal for some of them likely keeps Stan in the basement.
