Todd Cordell: Devils vs Rangers / Canadiens: Five things to watch

Panthers moving the C from Derek Mackenzie to Barkov feels like what the Devils should do Greene -> Hall. Nothing against Andy I just think Hall is objectively the leader of this team now, Greene being captain feels like a relic from a bygone era.

I think Hall-Nico-Palms is the single best line the team can ice right now but agree with the decision to put Bratt up top. Last season Bratt seemed dependent on being with Hall and Nico to produce whereas Palmieri seems to be productive regardless of where you put him in the lineup.

As always thanks Todd, good read. Yeah, why not mix up the defensive pairings, its preseason. On the "C" question if Greene wants to give it up fine if he wants to keep it thats fine too, don't force the issue though. That would bring some hurt egos and probably some team dissension.

looking forward to finally watching some Devils hockey. Lots to watch for in these 2 games.

so my terrible analysis based off nearly nothing tells me Nico shows some speed, similar to last year, and not showing so much strength, similar to last year. McLeod continues to not impress when he has the opportunity to. Smith looks good.. good passer, but based off a period of preseason lol, probably should take another year developing.

Quenneville looked good. Nice goal and tried to be involved with every play.

Quenneville looked good. Nice goal and tried to be involved with every play.

Quenn does look good, I agree. I haven't been impressed with Yak, but I don't feel like I'm seeing him much, which can be good. I feel like wee can't really say much based off this game for the new guys. it's all new to them. I think their 2nd/3rd games will be decent barometers.

Always thought Lappin should get more of a look than was given. Might be a candidate to make the roster this year.

Ty Smith looks like a Will Butcher clone running the power play. Not a bad thing.

Blackwood is just not good.

yea I was giving Smith a nod of approval by the end of the game. If you forget he's 18, he looks like just another player that you want on your team. Just 1 game, but he did look good overall. Made some good plays, some surprising plays. Bratt didn't seem to do much. Lappin capitalized. Quenn looked good.

nevermind. No points, -2, 0 shots, 1 hit, 0 blocks, 1 giveaway, 0 takeaways.. in his top line ice time of 20 minutes and 40 seconds. I have a feeling the numbers do tell the story this time.

None of them were good, but some of them at least got some shots on net, or got some blocks, hits, or takeaways without giveaways. Zacha is supposed to be a top 3 forward on the ice in that game and he posted one of the worst stat lines.
just 1 game and just preseason. McLeod had a nice 3rd period tonight.

Boyle looked good on the PP.
