Wow - looking out for his family - whatta schmuck. Especially since the whole league thought the cap would continue to go up dramatically every year. (Unlike the situation with Tavares an McDavid. )

I think Rocky should lower his ticket prices instead of taking what the market will bear - AND, while he’s at it, drop the prices of his liquor. No cap on ticket prices, you say? Yeah, all of these good free-market owners just love the free market on the sell side, with communistic price controls on the buy.

Haven’t the owners made enuf money too?

- StLBravesFan

You're right toews needs $110 mil in career salary earnings (not including endorsements) to "look out for his family"

It was an incredibly stupid thing to say in his instance. There's nothing wrong with wanting to earn more money but then don't say things like it was to look out for your family when that's just a laughable joke

Such an idiodic comment to make after signing an $84 mil contract that he needs to look after himself and his family. As if the contract was only $76 mil he wouldn't have been able to.

And like you said, he still made over $30 mil in previous contracts.

He can spout the "it's part of the business side of hockey" BS, but him signing that contract and his declined play is largely the most impacting factor in the Hawks being a non playoff team whether he wants to keep ducking talking to the media about it or not

- Stan_Bowman

Toews captained the Hawks to the best decade in Blackhawk hockey. He signed a contract that in part rewarded what he did the previous ten years. He and Kane could have signed for more but decided not to. The cap stagnation wasn't forseen by anyone. Toews' slide in play wasn't anticipated by anyone and certainly not by him. Yes a part of the decline in the Hawks play is attributed to the decline play of Toews but lets not forget the decline in Seabrook and Keith's play, the loss of Marion Hossa, the injury to Crawford, the lack of vereran depth and the mediocrity of the prospect pool directly related to the Hawks success are also contributing factors.

If Toews' play hadn't deteriorated at all last year do the Hawks make the playoffs? I don't know? But if Keith, Seabrook, Crawford and Hossa all had good seasons and the Hawk's still had some of their depth do they make the playoffs even with Toews' poor season? I'd bet the farm they would have.

It's a shame Toews' career seems to be at a crossroads but after the last ten years of the best hockey Hawk fans have ever witnessed I find it hard to be critical of the front office, coaching staff or any of the core players who are all on the downside of their careers.

I like the balance amongst the D-pairs with the stay at home types paired with the offensive puck movers. CBJ has a much more NHL regulars in the lineup tonight, so will be a good test for the defense-man.

Honestly lost a good amount of respect for Toews here. He makes more than he needs to live comfortably off of and he doesnt value winning and being competitive year in and year out as much as we thought if this was his response. Upsetting as since their 2015 cup win, the Hawks have been grossly non competitive for a cup and he couldnt even sound off that he would leave a little on the table to get back to the finals

And he's won cups!

A few things you/NASH know nothing about.

How's Austin Watson doing these days, anyway?

As the captain of the team, at least for a soundbite, I would have said, knowing what I know now and having a rough last couple of seasons, I might have taken a little less to keep the team more competitive.

More importantly, I wouldn't have spouted out that I needed to look out for my family.

Toews isn't some journeyman NHLer who has no future after hockey ends and he is still trying to earn year to year contracts to stay in the league around minimum salary to support a family

After the way he's played the last two years and with his dumb ass comments. Give the c to kane or keith. Pretty heartless response with him not saying he should take less money.

Be honest, had he said that what would your response have been?

Toews would have taken as much grief for that comment from Hawk fans. There is no right way to answer that question. Sure his answer was flippant but saying "knowing what I know now" about the cap situation and the decline in his play would have sounded dumb considering very few of us have the ability to see into the future. Also had he admitted he should have signed for less, he would be pounced on as well.

Same old poop everyday with you hey?
- GPHawksfan

The question ought to be, do we expect from both Q and U Samuelson the same philosohy and coaching as last year? Although each h situation and player may be different, we cannot afford to have a prospect t .okdef or coached ti play a certain way when the team and ability is waning for the system.

Going one step farther, what will be done about forwards supporting defensemen better and the woeful telegraphed pp they employ.

Less of Keith on Pp is not the only solutuon .

I really wanna see what that 3rd line can do. Fortin needs to show up, Kurashev has been doing well, and highmore has been good with his speed.

IMO, I don't think the NHLPA or the player's agents want the players saying anything about taking less or deserving less money.

Swap out Kampf/Martinsen and that's an ideal line up to stat from me.

Two skilled top lines, shoot-playmaker combos, more balanced in size and role. Sheltered OZ 3rd line - bumslayer. Checking/shutdown line that can transition.

I like Martinsen okay but Hayden-Martinsen today limits a line too much imo.
