Interesting reddit post about Nylander’s contract situation. Apparently, a player holding out for a contract can have their cap hit front loaded in the first season, and the longer they sit out, the more you can do that. This happened with Hampus Lindholm. So the whole holdout thing might just be a ploy to reduce next year’s cap hit, and make it easier to sign Marner and Matthews.

Doesn't make sense though. If he doesn't sign a contract until later, he still loses out on money. He won't get paid retroactively to the time he missed. Like if he didn't sign until December, he wouldn't be paid for the 3 months he missed prior.
It's much more likely he just wants more money and the Leafs aren't moving yet because it's crucial he doesn't get overpaid. |
