I guess it all depends who Luongo feels more loyal too, the Panthers or Canucks. If Luongo wants to go on LTIR, the Panthers still hold the cap hit for the duration of contract, if he retires in 2020, the Panthers only pay 73, 000 for the remaining 2 seasons, while the Canucks are accountable for 4.3 million for those 2 seasons.
Luongo's contract pays him peanuts in his final couple seasons and he would be able to recoup much of that on his pension cheque, while also taking a job within the Panthers organization.

I know but its unofficial so he collects his salary. 35+ contracts have a recapture penalty which he doesn’t affect us.

LTIR rules differ depending on if before or after seasons start. Hossa was a problem for the Hawks due to timing.

It actually doesn't work that way. It just means they can exceed the the cap by the amount of dollars that the player receives.
There is also something about how much cap room that that team currently has, before LTIR relief kicks in.

It's based on when the contract is signed and the Luongo penalty has nothing to do with the 35 plus portion of the cba.

It's called the Luongo rule for a reason and Berkman has a huge booner and an itchy fingering finger for punishing us for moving him by signing him for it.
