Sure, but the Sens may have officially just passed the Oilers in terms of how inept an organizaiton they are. they are without a doubt a bigger mess than the Oilers right now.
- prock

The sens got more for Brassard from the Pens than Karlsson. I know Brassard being under contract changes the game a little, but that still shouldn't happen.

Poor Pierre Dorion gets ripped and is the butt of jokes because he has his hands tied by an inept, shallow-pocketed, owner.

Dorion may or may not be a competent NHL GM. But there is no way of knowing when he is forced to act on things because he has a cheap owner who doesn't care at all about winning.

Everything Dorion does is about saving Melnyk money.

I really wonder how long the NHL can allow a toxic owner to destroy a franchise like this.

John Tavares wasn’t traded. He lied and told front office not to trade him. That he wanted to be an Islander.
- BringNYIhome

Nope.
He simply said at the TD that he didnt know his future.

It's amazing what an impact the trading of Duchene has had for the two franchises.

The stars are all aligned for the Avs to get the first overall pick and they might just turn into the next dynasty. Mackinnon and Hughes would be as close to Crosby-Malkin as you can get.

Ottawa is just absurdly terrible. Does Wilson have a video of Dorion and Melnyk making love or something? First they give SJ Hoffman for half the value and now the same with Karlsson. No way Stone or Duchene will stick around, nor will they be able to sign any big name players because they certainly will not be the top bidder.

Sens fans suck pretty bad but even they don't deserve this.

- MacPatty

Uh? Dynasty?
Hughes hasnt even played an NHL game yet.
You want the next Crosby/Malkin JT/Matthews...or and toss in Kadri on the 3rd line

There have definitely been worse trades, but this has to be up there.

I usually don't agree with Tanner, but I his assessment is pretty spot on.

Considering the position of the team now too. Ownership issues, attendance shortage, which is likely to only get worse. A mass exodus of talent is being projected...this could actually be a trade that leads to the team getting moved. If that actually happens (and it would be a bloody shame) then I think it could be the worst trade in history.

I’ve been saying this for a while. They are driving this franchise into the ground so they can move the team out of town.

At the end of the day, EK65 had a limited NTC and wasn't offered a reasonable contract for a player of his stature. Ottawa gets a 1st rd pick, a former first round pick who was teammates with Tkachuk last year, 2 roster players and a 2 conditional picks. Not great but also not as bad as you doorknobs make it out to be.

Hahaha....perfectly reasonable, unbiased opinion!

Karlsson is already a two-time Norris winner, and probably deserves to have at least one more. Hossa is a good player, but to put him in the same league as Karlsson is complete nonsense

Karlsson is, HANDS DOWN, the greatest Senator of all time. I get that's kinda like being the smartest kid on the short bus, but it's very true

Not sure how anybody can completely remove Alfredsson from this discussion when the guy pretty much leads the team in every stat...

Thoughts? Good deal for Ottawa. They are in good shape for the future. Their top two forwards are UFAs. Owner is a complete Ballard clone. They traded away their #1 pick. They couldn’t sell out the eastern conference finals two years ago. 👍🏻

true.... that said, I don't get why they didn't hold onto Karlsson until the trade deadline. You have more teams interested AND you won more games to prevent the Avs from getting a top pick.

"It is, quite possibly, the worst trade in the history of the NHL." - Dunno, Alek Stojanov for Markus Naslund seems worse to me, and that's just off the top of my head. Maybe also Samuelsson and Frances to Pittsburgh for a bag of pucks.

Without a doubt Sens lost big . Even with this likely being a year rental for SJ. There should have been at least 1 key piece for the Sens to do this. Dorion/ Melnyk are liars and just damaging.
Saying that ,Karlsson is going to be 1 year older next year, 1 more year on a fragile ankle, questionable locker room attitude. Whos going to pay him next year 7 x 11 plus bonuses. Someone will and hopefully someone in the East. Be nice to have weakened competition in few years from now.

Worst trade I have seen since the big Thorton trade (way to go again SJS). You received low-end depth players and what will likely be a very late first round pick????? Pacioretti had a WAY larger return!!!! Even Tatar was traded for a 1st,2nd,3rd. I am furious my devs didn't put in a better offer than that garbage. Good luck Karlsson. And good luck Ott, because its a tire fire now

One last point on this, the first round pick has a better than zero percent chance of being a lottery pick. The sharks are stacked this year, but with an aging core and an increasingly competitive western conference, it's very presumptuous to suggest that first round pick is going to be a late one. Thornton/Pavelski/EK65 all UFA after this season and it's not like the sharks can afford to bring them all back in 2020. Their bottom six took a legit hit by trading Tierney, and while I'm not saying they're going to miss the playoffs in 2020, it's entirely possible they might.

Now back to the whine parade...

I can count on no hands, the number of times I have agreed with Tanner...

But, this is the worst trade in recent memory, and should go on any top 5 list of the worst trades of all time.

The return is a joke.

As a hypothetical Tampa GM, I would have given the following :

Killorn
2019 1st
2020 2nd
Dotchin
Raddysh

I proposed something similar to this several months ago and it was roundly mocked as not enough. Now we see Karlsson for less, substantially less.

He had to trade him now. What if gets injured during the year and misses most of the season? Then he walks at the end of the year and you get no return at all. From what I've read, other GMs seem to respect Dorian and think he could be a good GM. I too think the problem is with the owner and that Dorian's hands are tied.

I think the Naslund trade is damn near the top. Jagr to Washingtion? Kovalev to the Rangers? The Pens virtually got nothing for these 3 players.

They'd have been better off trading EK straight up to Colorado for their 2019 1st back. You can almost guarantee thats gonna be a Top 3 pick
