how long has Arizona been a joke franchise?

also they didn't get a 4th line player. thats just a flat out silly statement.

- rinaldo

The best teams in the NHL dress a third line centre who could be a first line centre on a bad team. If Chris Tierny ever plays third line centre on a contender, I'll apologize to you in writing.

Hossa? Try Alfredson and you might have had a point.

Ok so there's two that are better.

Tanner seems more ticked with the Oilers than the Sens. An interesting perspective. But please do consider that whatever the Oil could have offered, EK was unlikely to have signed to stay beyond one year. Staying beyond one year in San Jose is a worthy consideration.
- maroussi

If Ottawa eats the Lucic contract, and the Oilers send them Yamamoto, Evan Bouchard and their next two firsts, that is a significantly better package and the Oilers would have been instant cup contenders.

Like even for just one year, pairing McDavid and Karlsson together I bet it'd be hard for him to walk away from that.

Everyone wins. I almost feel bad ripping Dorian, he was obviously told after the fluke CF appearance to try and win, and then when that failed, he was told to try and package Ryan's contract, when in fact the only way you're going to come close to winning a deal like this is if you take on salary too.

Without a doubt Sens lost big . Even with this likely being a year rental for SJ. There should have been at least 1 key piece for the Sens to do this. Dorion/ Melnyk are liars and just damaging.
Saying that ,Karlsson is going to be 1 year older next year, 1 more year on a fragile ankle, questionable locker room attitude. Whos going to pay him next year 7 x 11 plus bonuses. Someone will and hopefully someone in the East. Be nice to have weakened competition in few years from now.

- spazzbot

Im thinking crap, why didnt the Flames get in on this. We could have offered Brodie who has 2 years left at a great salary & would probably be on your top pairing & we throw in Kylington who has tons of potential & maybe a 2nd rounder. Karlsson would play with Gio on the top pairing, & even if he walks at the end of the year, we have our top 2 prospects in our system who happen to be Dmen in Valamaki & Andersson stepping in the following year(will probably see them this year as well). Crap.... now we have to fcking deal with Burns & Karlsson on the point when we play San Jose!!! Damn you Dorian Damn you!!!!

he isn't a 4th line center. thats a fact. I ma sure he wouldn't even get into the Arizona lineup.

so who are the best teams who have centers who can be top center on bad teams?

bad teams being buffalo Edmonton Arizona. as they were bottom 3 I think.

Erik Karlsson is mediocre to bad at playing defense and his ankle injury cost him half a step. Karlsson will be 29 years old, and looking for a max term and $$ deal next summer that San Jose probably can't afford. He is essentially a rental player for 1 year without a contract extension, and considering the negotiating leverage that Ottawa had (NONE), it could have been a much worse return.

EDIT: WhyTHE (frank) did Ottawa send the Avs their (likely top 3) 1st round pick to only marginally upgrade from Turris to Duchene??? Days like today make me realize that Stan Bowman isn't the worst GM in the NHL....but a close 3rd to worst behind Chiarelli and whoever is in Ottawa.

These are excellent points. People that analyze these deals rarely take into account leverage. Ottawa had very little......especially since they seemed determined to ship him to the west which cut the market in half.

I think the biggest mistake they made was waiting too long expecting the offers to increase....which is rarely the case no matter what product you're selling.

Don’t forget Danny Heatley. It was only four seasons, but he lit it up.

As a Blackhawks fan, I know far too well what it's like to get literal garbage back for Top Line players...Byfuglien, Ladd, Campbell, Sharp, Leddy, Frolik and the list goes on......

John Tavares wasn’t traded. He lied and told front office not to trade him. That he wanted to be an Islander.

Tanner- you do not know hockey if you think Karlsson is the best player Ottawa ever had. Remember a guy named Hossa? Much better overall hockey player, even to this day.

I know that Hoss played for the Hawks (and was an awesome player, don't get me wrong), but

It's amazing what an impact the trading of Duchene has had for the two franchises.

The stars are all aligned for the Avs to get the first overall pick and they might just turn into the next dynasty. Mackinnon and Hughes would be as close to Crosby-Malkin as you can get.

Ottawa is just absurdly terrible. Does Wilson have a video of Dorion and Melnyk making love or something? First they give SJ Hoffman for half the value and now the same with Karlsson. No way Stone or Duchene will stick around, nor will they be able to sign any big name players because they certainly will not be the top bidder.

Sens fans suck pretty bad but even they don't deserve this.

This was always going to be a loss for OTT and as Sens fans we were prepared for that, but the sign of a decent deal would be if fans of whoever got him was at least a little leery of what they gave up (eg. Heiskanen from DAL, or one of TB's young guns) Those fans would have changed their minds the second EK stepped on the ice in their favourite jersey, but at least it would demonstrate that there was some quality. In this case, most Sens fans would have rather had one more season to watch the magic and say our goodbyes, since we have tons of bottom 6 F and 5/6 D men, and they didn't even get a 1st round pick in a year that they don't have one. At this point I think we would have been happy with getting Adam Larsson

Karlsson is 3rd all time in Sens points. He also has higher ppg as a Sen than Hossa did, so I don't know what you're on about.

I agree they rushed the deal. But letting an asset go for nothing could also be argued as a poor move that makes you look like a joke.

The Isles are getting a fair amount of criticism for that very move.

- david22

Sure. Then trade him for the sit return later if you have to. But at least TRY to hold out for a better deal.
