Agreed on all fronts, except James' argment that they'd be better off letting him go for nothing.

Perception or not, you have to get something back for your player, even if it's a poor return. The fact they couldn't even get one of Meier or Hertl though really stings.

So you think the Sharks are going to miss the playoffs, and the Sens will win the lottery with that pick.

That's a bold prediction, and I'm going to hold you to it.

I honestly think that making your franchise into a total joke is worse than letting him go for nothing. At least then you tell your fans "we did everything we could to keep him here."

Why exactly did they have to make a bad deal 65 games before the trade deadline?

Simple way to spin it back even though it's a bold faced lie and would be seen right through? "EK would have been a problem in the locker room this whole season if the contract negotiations continued the way they were going and he was holding us hostage for a bigger deal than we could rightfully give him with the other future deals we needed to sign also."

also they didn't get a 4th line player. thats just a flat out silly statement.

I agree they rushed the deal. But letting an asset go for nothing could also be argued as a poor move that makes you look like a joke.

The Isles are getting a fair amount of criticism for that very move.

Tanner- you do not know hockey if you think Karlsson is the best player Ottawa ever had. Remember a guy named Hossa? Much better overall hockey player, even to this day.

Nothing friend. The offseason is just a bleak and dark time...we need something to watch.

Tanner seems more ticked with the Oilers than the Sens. An interesting perspective. But please do consider that whatever the Oil could have offered, EK was unlikely to have signed to stay beyond one year. Staying beyond one year in San Jose is a worthy consideration.

John Tavares wasn’t traded. He lied and told front office not to trade him. That he wanted to be an Islander.

Erik Karlsson is mediocre to bad at playing defense and his ankle injury cost him half a step. Karlsson will be 29 years old, and looking for a max term and $$ deal next summer that San Jose probably can't afford. He is essentially a rental player for 1 year without a contract extension, and considering the negotiating leverage that Ottawa had (NONE), it could have been a much worse return.

EDIT: WhyTHE (frank) did Ottawa send the Avs their (likely top 3) 1st round pick to only marginally upgrade from Turris to Duchene??? Days like today make me realize that Stan Bowman isn't the worst GM in the NHL....but a close 3rd to worst behind Chiarelli and whoever is in Ottawa.

Hossa? Try Alfredson and you might have had a point.

Flagged this by accident I swear!

Anyway!

Karlsson absolutely looked like he had lost a step. But even then still put up great numbers on a bad team.

There's a chance that he's still behind a step. But its also possible that he comes back from a long off season and is back on his game of being a game breaker every time he's on the ice.

Without a doubt Sens lost big . Even with this likely being a year rental for SJ. There should have been at least 1 key piece for the Sens to do this. Dorion/ Melnyk are liars and just damaging.
Saying that ,Karlsson is going to be 1 year older next year, 1 more year on a fragile ankle, questionable locker room attitude. Whos going to pay him next year 7 x 11 plus bonuses. Someone will and hopefully someone in the East. Be nice to have weakened competition in few years from now.
