Looks like Q had Keith and Seabrook back together again today. L-B-R (or anyone) are they still good together? I’d expect if Seabs did work on his conditioning this summer, the minutes may not be as big a factor for him. Though, I think Keith could do with fewer minutes at this point.

Boston and Washington played an exhibition game in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China yesterday - just ahead of landfall of Typhoon Mangkhut just south of there.

I assume they got out ok - they’re scheduled for a game in Beijing on Wednesday.

Wasn’t Seabrook supposed to be out for a week?

I guess his abdominal injury wasn't as serious. Which is a good thing his declining play or however you look at it. We need everyone to be healthy to start the season.

It depends on how prepared both of them are, really. Last year was the first where a Keith-Seabrook pair didn't work, though it was also the first in a while where they got the absolute top quality of comp. Before, they would switch with Hjammer-Oduya and it was a good balance - they did not have that last year, despite whatever they tried with Forsling-Rutta (who saw more DZ but not higher QOC).

Personally, I'd rather Keith and Seabrook be broken up to spread out the vets. I don't really like Rutta or Manning and Gustafsson is best utilized on an offensive 3rd pair. So if Q think Seabrook could be back in the top 4, I think starting him on the 2nd pair and see if he can really handle those minutes again. Let Jokijarju get in the 12-15 games Murphy will miss opposite Keith and then assess after that. Q can always throw Keith-Seabrook out in certain situations if he doesn't think Jokiharju can handle it - he's literally done this in the past with Keith's partners, swapping them with Seabrook or Hjammer.

As for time, Keith doesn't need any less - I think people have a slight skewed perception of how much Keith was actually on the ice. He was down to less then 24 minutes last season, 2 minutes less than where he was the season before - his PK time stayed relatively even but his time at 5v5 and some on the PP went down.

Glad to hear Q felt Seabrook showed up in great shape.

""He had a good summer," said Head Coach Joel Quenneville. "I thought he did a real good job of training and pushing it to the next level. I think when we're looking at his fitness levels, and he wasn't able to test that day, but we know that he's way better than he's ever been. That commitment shows he's doing everything he can to enhance his game and enhance our team game.""

I'm cautiously optimistic for the season to start, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't pumped for preseason. I'm excited to see who gets a shot at the big club and who might be an easy/early call-up from Rockford. It has been far too long without hockey. I don't have much to look forward too because the Bears still look and play like the Bears.

No one should ever have to defend themselve for making a clean legal hit, no matter who they hit, or how hard. Anyone who instigates a fight with someone because they laid a legal check ought to be suspended for 10 games.
- Ogilthorpe2

The instigator penalty is bad enough a ten game suspension is a wee bit extreme, don’t you think?

Camp Essentials
1) Goaltending - without better goaltending nothing else matters. Ward and Forsberg need to play well early and then hope Crow comes back at some point (as good as the old Crow)
2) Improved Defense - hopefully a 2nd year with Ulfie will make a big difference.
3) Underdog Mentality - If they do not raise the compete level they are not making the playoffs. Period. We may not be big, but we can be scrappy. A little Andrew Shaw feistiness would go a long way. Kunitz, Manning, Seabs, Rutta, Martinsen, Hayden need to set the tone.
4) improvements all around (with the exception of Kane and ADB)
- Veterans (Toews, Keith, Seabs, Saad, AA)
- Young/Newer defenders - Rutta, Forsling, Murphy, Forsling, Hillman
- Forwards - Sikura, Kampf, Highmore, Edjsell, Hayden, Highmore, Fortin
5) A quick adjustment by newbies - Kahun, Jokiharju,
6) Contributions from veterans - Kunitz, Manning, Martinsen, Kruger
7) Q to slow down the blender
8) They do either really well or really lousy. Best case be in position to make the playoffs at the TDL and use cap space to make a trade. 2nd best case play awful and win the lottery. Worst case make a trade at the TDL and miss the playoffs.

I’m a Morrisey fan but he’s not the type of player you offer sheet.

Justin, is your next blog about any thoughts or notions going into preseason, or are you just going to sum up what you have seen (game to game or all the games collectively?)

I am a first-time blogger … actually to anything. Social media is not my thing. I have been a reader on this site for a long time. So I have to say, Justin, I think you are doing a great job and have loved all of your pieces. The passing of the torch has been seamless from Jaeckel to you. Keep up the great work.

I fall under the category of spoiled Hawks fan as I was only born in 95. Actually, drafting Toews got me interested in hockey, then came Kane, and the rest is dynasty. I appreciate the long run that we've had, always making it to the playoffs or even further. I'm not spoiled in the fact that I have missed out on some great Chicago runs, 85 Bears falls under the greatest year in football and Jordan's run with the Bulls. Sure I have the Sox in 05 and the Cubs are great … I actually hate baseball and basketball. Football and hockey all the way.

I know nothing about fancy stats, I've been here learning what certain things mean. I just give plays and people the eye test. I do have a question, it's not like every area on our team is filled to our liking and is perfect for playoff contention (outside of optimism,) with over 5 mil in cap space, who is the better addition as far as RFA's go: Forwards, William Nylander vs Miles Wood or Defense, Shea Theodore vs Darnell Nurse?

- I Am The Breadman

Welcome Breadman!

I expect all 4 of those RFAs to sign with there teams. Nylander and Nurse would look great in a Hawks jersey though.

Tomorrow AM, I will posting my last edition of possible line combinations, focusing on the defence this time.

With the Murphy and Forsling injuries, there's a lot in the air still.

I have some training camp notes as well.

There will be a lot to dissect during the preseason games as well. I don't tend to write specific game previews/recaps, but rather focus on surrounding storylines... and there will be a lot to talk about leading up to the Game #1.

It really appears the Hawks are positioning Ejdsell to make the team. I wonder how much of that is based on his performance versus wanting immediate value from the Hartman deal.

Good point, but his shot is NHL quality. Although, I don't agree with him being on a line with AA.

Any trade talks in the works that maybe you have heard. Nylander and nurse would change the whole complexion of the team. But they are coming here. Still think bowman needs another center.

Not at all. The bullpoop would stop pretty quickly. Why have anyone bust their hand on a guy when his own guy caused it all by keeping his head down in the first place.
GOOD hits are part of the game. Don't want to get run don't play hockey.

Looks that way right now.

Things can change from now until game #1 but looks like the Hawks are looking for all the help they can get and Ejdsell could also be a weapon on the PP with his shot.

We'll see if his production continues into the preseason.
