Do you think either of those guys means the Hawks are in serious contention to win the cup? If not, then it's not worth it because it'd likely be for only the one season. Duchene wants in the $7m range like E.Kane/Pacioretty/JVR while Stone wants what he's getting now or more which is already over $7m. The Hawks can't take on either one without a roster player being moved, Anisimov is the only real option and the likihood he put Ottawa on his trade-list seems slim to none.

Some Hawks fans just don't get it or accept it that the Hawks are not one player away from being a serious Cup contender so trading assets that could help in future seasons in order to help this season is not a good trade. The Hawks had a very good run, now we have to take our lumps for a season or two in order to possibly get back into Cup contention in a year or two. Too many Hawks fans just want to whine and complain about stuff.

By that logic we shouldn't give ADB or Schmaltz their big pay day either, because signing them to big dollar deals would crowd out other additions to the squad. Unless all of the chips are in the rookie bank, in which case it is a long next three years to see who sticks, and if three years of lottery picks change things much.

If I am staring at $13-15MM in upcoming expenditures next year no matter what I do, why not bring Stone or Duchene in for one year to push the development of the younger guys, upgrade the top six while you are at it, and then ask where the best bang for the buck comes from at the end of the season.

I think they are at a go big or go bust nexus right now. Anything in between will screw them out of high draft picks down the road.

I actually prefer the go bust path with the sheer number of holes in the team from the net on out.

$7mil would be better spent on a Top Pairing Dman, IMO

Both Boqvist and Beaudin looked good in Traverse City. Beaudin is on the smaller side like you are saying they both will grow. I see Beaudin as the next Duncan Keith.
- Sn1362

I would have to agree with you about Beaudin. Mitchell, too. While it's too early to tell what they will eventually become and it's lofty to think that they will be Norris-caliber like Keith, I think both Beaudin and Mitchell are in the same mold as Keith. Top 4 material.

Maybe Krys to a certain extent but think he's behind them on the depth chart anyway. He may be more like a 4-5-6 defender.

I was all for adding some rent-a-players for this year to see if they could catch lightening in a bottle and do something this year. Alas, it was not meant to be. I'm glad they didn't overpay for any of the guys that did get traded. It still feels like guys in their prime don't want to join the Blackhawks at the moment because it isn't a very good team right now and the future is pretty uncertain. Big questions for this season:

1) when will Crawford come back and how good will he be again
2) how will the core perform? any bounce back or are they all on the downward slide of their careers (Kane excepted)
3) will the young guys take steps forward? How far?
4) will anyone surprise in camp?
5) will the Blackhawks be buyers or sellers at the TDL?

Yep, sounds like taking some lumps.

Hey Justin, thanks for the question. I've been a Flyers fan for 44 years and started following the Hawks in the 80's during the Dave Manson years. I've always appreciated Manning because he was undrafted, worked hard for a few years in the minors, and finally made it to the big show. He was a scapegoat in Philly, but he wasn't nearly as bad as many folks made him out to be.

The main issue they had with him was pinching at inopportune times and he would usually make one highlight reel mistake during the game(fall down, get caught up ice, etc). Many times it wouldn't lead to anything for the other team, but he caught the wrath of the fans anyway. He is very well respected by his teammates, will stick up for everyone, works hard, and does the little things to help out. He chipped in 19 pts last year, which was the best of his three year NHL career.

I think he will fit in well in Chicago as long as he's not asked to do too much. Coach Hakstol in Philly often had him playing above his skill set, so I hope Q won't do the same. He should be good for 20-25 pts and play a decent physical game.

- boxcar65

Thank you for your evaluation of Manning ! I was also curious about him. Sounds like he might be like a Brent Sopel but with more offense to his game than Soppy

We knew it was going to be a tough season.

We've known it for some time.

Why not enjoy it for what it should be - a showcase for many of the younger players to see how they develop, looking at Keith and Toews (with Kane, the remaining healthy "core" players) to see how much they can come back....

This still could be an exciting hockey experience.

- StLBravesFan

Exactly. But many find it more entertaining to complain about the same issues everyday.

Doesn't sound like he will be going to LTIR, based on his comments "How he felt good on the ice" and "things have been progressing very well" .

Seems like they are taking a real kid glove approach to easing him back in because honestly, why rush if he isn't 100% ready.

- breadbag

LTIR does nothing for the hawks anyway. They're not right up against the cap this year.

I'm going to nitpick here and call this out. It's frustrating when fans do this. I know you're probably being facetious, but I think this happens a lot on this board. Odds are he was training for the season and injured himself in his training. He's out 8 weeks, bet he didn't tweak his back on a golf swing. Just something that grinds my gears. *Insert Peter Griffin Picture*

I wasn’t trying to ignorant here, I am all for training hopefully number seven took heed after his year last year, I want to see Connor Murphy succeed I still think he could be a number three or four solid NHL defenseman for years to come. That is why I kind of them honing in on Ottawa if they are willing to sell the way they are, what you got? But it has to be a top six forward none of the bottom six club foots And expect them to come in here and play top six.

He sounded like he usually does? Idk how often you guys listen to Crawford's interviews in the past, but he's always been a monotone and slow speaker who says um a lot. It could definitely be a while but nothing in his speech patterns tell you that - his actual words and actions should do the talking, if you will.
- L_B_R

No poop hey? Now fans know what is wrong with someone by how they speak. Glad you made a point of this. Jesus some people.

Maybe if the NHL knows who and how someone is injured, the refs will be able to call targeting to (Re)injure with stiffer penalty? Like someone targeting Toews head and back constantly.
- pdx2ord

This sounds dumb. You checked him on the right shoulder penalty because he's just coming back from injury. Do you think guys coming back from concussions should were high viz and shouldn't be allowed to be hit for a couple of weeks to? Asinine

See your logic Enzo, got to disagree though, unless you lose one of the top two we already have contract wise, would rather see them get a top six forward. I have a funny feeling that one or two of These young defenseman not name for sling or Gustavsson is going to make a serious run to make the team out of training camp.

So Malkin ended Crow's career with an unpenalized goon shot.
How many times do we play Pitt this year?

Crow's last game was 12-23-17. His last game against Pittsburgh was 5 weeks before that on 11-18-17. Therefore, I doubt it was Malkin's hit on him that caused his problems.

I'd say the Weber slapshot to the face probably had more to do with the concussion

He did say today that it happened before he went out. He hoped it would get better, but it didn’r, and he had to call it quits.

And will repeat what I just said to my hockey fan girlfriends in the middle of dissecting the new Toews line - HOCKEY IS BACK LADIES AND GENTS!!! WOOT!!!

Take these early combos with a massive grain of salt. But here's what the Blackhawks are running:

Kunitz-Toews-DeBrincat
Saad-Schmaltz-Kane
Ejdsell-Anisimov-Sikura
Hayden-Kruger-Martinsen
Kampf-Johnson-Kahun

Keith-Jokiharu
Manning-Rutta
Davidson-Gustafsson
Dahlstrom-Boqvist

I had heard there was a chance that Q was going to try Kunitz and Toews together.

This is just minutes into camp... so don't react too much to this, but interesting to see what Q wants to try off the hop.

- Justin Lowe

As I mentioned way back, if and a big IF Kunitz can regain his form from back in Pitt from playing on Crosby's line that would make a whole lot of sense playing with Toews. His last couple of years was nothing but a checking/grinding line in Tampa. Now was it because he lost his form or he couldn't crack Tampa's top 6, maybe 9? Or was it a combo of both. I guess we will find out. If it works out, here you go:

Kunitz/Toews/Debrincat
Saad/Schmaltz/Kane
Kahun/AA/Sikura
Kampf/Kruger/Hayden

Edjsell would be on the 3rd line fighting out with Kahun

Ugh, I really don't understand playing Debrincat on his right. The guy has the best shot on the team and you want him in that left circle ripping one timers.
- fattybeef

In his spot duties last year at LW, Dcat looked out of sorts and not nearly as comfortable. I know coming in on the off-wing is a scorer's dream but Dcat somehow managed to get to the or close to high slot; thus making the net bigger for him and obviously cashing in.

I still would love to see them get in the ball game for Matt Duchenne, I understand we need defense but this kid is only 27 years old, and if San Jose parted with a less than spectacular package to get Karlsson, I got a think it would be worth looking into, and there you take a gamble, that the kid would come here, have a good year, fall in love with the city, and want to sign here after this year, and there is your top six winger. I don’t know what to say about Connor Murphy, was it he just out swinging a golf club earlier this week? Hopefully like someone said earlier maybe this presents opportunity for a couple of these young defenseman to make a jump. That is why I, me personally, if Ottawa is in the giving mood, especially , After what I seen them take back for their trade yesterday, I would at least have to look into it. And if it would come to be then you tell the captain, here’s your top six winger now shut up and play. And put up at least 80 points
- wonthecup10

I used to really like Duchesne but since he has been in the doghouse towards the end of the Avs and looks like whole time in OTT. I really do hope he finds his again back.

To your question, at what cost? Who (s) are you going to give up?

hell maybe they will get blown off the ice the first 2 games and go on to win the cup; a complete reversal of last year...

I’d love a guy like Bieksa right now.

Especially after replaying the Malkin hit on Crosby and seeing the entire team response to it limited to Franson hugging Malkin on the boards while everyone else stood around and yanked their junk.
