Justin Lowe: Camping Essentials
It was a long offseason for the Chicago Blackhawks. It felt even longer to most of us as the Hawks were relatively inactive in terms of improving their team from last year's 76-point squad.
Instead, Stan Bowman has decided to double and triple down on his horses and go into the season having younger (and unproven) players vie for spots on the opening day roster.
While yesterday was technically the first day of training camp as the Hawks showed up for physicals, today is the first time they all step on the ice as a team.

Since Crow is supposed to be on the ice today (albeit without the other players), should we assume he passed his physical? Murky, murky, murky, but hopefully clearing soon.

From the end of the last blog:
Really want to see who the surprise will be in training camp this year. There is always someone. - breadbag
My predictions for training camp surprises: Beaudin, Knott, and Tyler Sikura. I don't think that necessarily parlays into a roster spot, though, given the numbers game.
I expect Dylan Sikura, Hayden, Kahun, Kampf, Highmore, Johnson, Fortin, Martinsen, Hillman, and Jokiharju to have strong camps and push for roster spots so not counting them as surprises. The bolded are my prediction to make the team.
Hillman would make the team if Rutta or Gustafsson is able to get traded before the season starts. Otherwise, he's the first call up in case of injuries or other reason. |

Not sure about that one PDX.
There will be more information released today and should be some interviews I would assume by Stan, Q, Toews, etc. Maybe even Crawford speaks again.
We shall see soon enough. |

I wonder if Shaw Boomhower is an under the radar type who impresses at camp. He looks like a late bloomer and stood out for me with his effort at Traverse City. Not much was said about him during the Tourney but our scouts must have noticed him because I see that he has been invited to the main camp.
Could he be the Andrew Shaw type that this team now lacks? He works hard, skates well, and probably agitates looking at his penalty history. |

Beaudin doesn't have an NHL contract. He will be heading back to the Q.
That's not to say he doesn't leave an impact on Q and the staff while he's here though.
I'm with ya on Hillman. I think he makes an impact on this team eventually. He may make the team out of camp, if not, I think he's a full-time player in 2019 at some point.

Thank you for pointing that out as that's a more accurate way to state Beaudin's situation: he'll make a great impression on the coaches and could potentially be a front runner to make the team next fall. |

Oh agreed. He very well could be on this team next year with another strong year in the Q and as he puts on more muscle and matures his game. |

It looks like Zetterberg's career is done.
Zetterberg has 3 more years left on his deal and was one of the Hossa-type contracts that would be exposed to the recapture penalty should he officially retire.
Moving Hossa's contract looks a bit better now. Had the Hawks waited they would have competed with the wings for unloading a contract.

Boomhower has an outsider's chance (literally and figuratively) but I do like that comparison to Shaw. Similar game and agitating style. He racks up the PIMs and has gotten suspended before so that could count against him. Then again, the Hawks wouldn't have given him a tryout if that was a deal breaker. |

And, Crawford is done for the day. He was on the ice for about 45 minutes, worked with Waite for about 30 minutes. |

Can you say dead last overall! This team lacks talent, hunger and it's core players are on the downside.
I find it hard to beleive Toews who has been on the downhill for the last 3 years is all of a sudden gonna become that Selke guy again, Seabrook is slower than a turtle , Crawford is coming off of injury . Kane has no help.
I'm looking at a team that will finish at the bottom and I see coach Q fired by December. He has become complacent |

Well, poop
Hawks press release:
Connor Murphy out 8 weeks with a back injury
Brent Seabrook out a week with an abdominal injury
Gustav Forsling remains out after wrist surgery
#GoodStart
So I now believe Rocky sold soul to Devil to obtain Kane and Toews back to back and payment is coming due. |

Tough start to the season already with Murphy, Forsling and (most like likely) Crawford all on the shelf.
Amazing opportunity for guys like Jokiharju and Hillman. |

Tough news on the D, but now my main man Brandon "Mandog" Manning can move up in the pairings and prove the naysayers wrong. Let's go Manner!! |

Is this a serious post?
If so, I think this is the only positive thing I've heard a Flyers fan say about him.
What's your take on him and what do you think he can bring to the Hawks? |
