They get hit with a portion of it too, don’t they?

As an aggregate yes, but in any one season they were never the worst. Each time they ended up picking in their most likely position. It’s all Linden’s fault, his work with the PA pissed off the NHL years ago and that was the payback. Now that he’s gone things will turn around.

The matthews year they were the worst team but the idiots at the end of the year decided to go on a three game win streak in California for some stupid reason

Odds keeping getting better that they will win it eventually. We'll see in the next few years. Fingers crossed.

This is their last chance. Personally, I think they make the playoffs this year, taking them out of the lottery, and for sure next year and beyond.

It all works out in the end. They got their guy, who will be part of the nucleus of a championship team for years to come!

The new 4th line is going to blow a lot of people's minds.

Not nearly as much. Plus, they don’t typically spend to the cap, so it would actually help them reach the floor. Cap hit with no actual money, sounds like a win-win for them.

It was in the best interest of the player and club to have him go on LTIR, in Lu's case the club won't lose anything keeping him around and might want him to mentor a young goalie. Lu could say (frank) it and retire, putting the recapture on the Canucks.

If Lou says he is injured he will get 3.6 mil . If he retires he gets nothing

That’s a no brainer. But, there will 100% be at least one player who was drafted after someone who has a better career. Of course. But you can not deny that the “best players” get picked before the less best players, unless the GM’s are idiots.

I don’t get why this is even a discussion. I’m not advocating tanking, only saying that the likelihood of getting a better player goes up when you pick earlier in the draft.

It’s more than a 4th line. Beagle will push all the guys aboveboard him to be better. He will really be the 3rd C, he was under utilized in Washington. With more opportunity in Van, he will put up career numbers next season, and he will shelter Gaudette so he can grow into the next Kesler in a few years time.

No tanking did. If you're not down in the bottom six or seven you only have a very marginal chance to pick top five. Tanking gave them the best odds.

Odd's are great, actually winning it is better.

I see.

I would be shocked if the league follows through on it, I think they just wanted to discourage gms from exploiting loopholes in the new cba, but as you say, the possibility exists, so management better have that in the back of their minds going forward.

In the last year of the deal which actually has the biggest recapture penalty he is due $1 million. If he's destined to ride the pine for 60 games he might just say (frank) it and enjoy the time with his family instead. I have a hard time believing he'll stick around for a million dollars. He might go on LTIR, but assuming he would as management would be assinine.

I seriously doubt he will stay on the bench. I think he would opt for LTIR as you mentioned.

Going forward I would pencil in his re-capture penalty into the cap for the team. That way there are no surprises.

I’m sure Benning and Weisbrod are in communication with Lu’s agent on a regular basis. They have a long term plan and are executing it to a tee. Not weighing the team down with extra picks in the later rounds over the first few years was genius, so the actual quality prospects had room to grow into their roles without the worry of too many contracts, or too much congestion on the farm team.

I think Beagle will be the #2 C by Christmas time. Sutts will stop scoring every second game by then and Greener will put him on the mentoring line. That being said, they will still be a wild card team for the playoffs.
