I wouldn't expect the Rangers to get a high number since they really just started the rebuild at this past tdl. Got to give it a few years. Not really much you can argue about his column.
I would only say Vesey is fine with the physical/work ethic, but has to score more on his chances. His finishing has been the issue.
Also think Pionk is going to be a surprise with his point totals. Kid has some skills |

I'm all about going balls out for Panarin if he becomes a UFA next summer, but, no way do I think the Rangers should trade anything to get any pending UFA
same for Karlsson
Rangers need to hold onto every asset they can and by all means open the checkbook big time next summer if all these pending UFA's remain on the market |

Just looked at Red Wings roster on cap friendly and you are right ----- Detroit is in cap hell.
For all of the complaints here about Gorton, he is systematically getting rid of our over-30, high-priced players. |

once they put Franzen on LTIR, they are pretty much at the cap and seem to only have 20 players |

seems to be a lot of people who expect Zetterberg not to be back they'll just LTIR him along with Franzen, if that happens, then they'll be ok |

Thanks for an interesting piece, Jan.
And I do find this topic interesting. Because, while I agree that you can't argue the take on the current state of the Rangers, I wonder at the usefulness of comparing them to the Capitals.
Not to take anything away from a team that is the current Stanley Cup champs, but their success came primarily from playing their best hockey at the right time. On a grand scale, I would categorize them as something closer to the 2006 Carolina Hurricanes than the 1982 Islanders.
If we keep on with the vision that seems to be in place and continue to make (mostly) the right decisions, we will have our kick at the can again. |

Great blog Jan, although I never knew that a Marc "STARK" was one of the very few remaining Rangers here from the 2014 Cup Finals.
(I believe you were possibly thinking close to that last name of another New York Finals Series participant at MSG in John Starks in 1994 on the court.)
All kidding aside, I agree with your analysis, despite still feeling in addition to spending $700K in signing Claesson on defense, that they would have been "medium" priced shoppers this off season, either through signing two veteran experienced, mid level free agent wingers up front, or in acquiring them via trades, to help lead better along their kids' development well. That's in key where the defensive games of a Nash and Grabner will be missed in helping lead them, & especially on the penalty kill.
But most ironic as for the Capitals blueprint Cup winning plan, is that one key player responsible for it was one who some NHL experts after the 2016/17 playoffs felt the Caps might move last off season. That one of equally most importance to Ovi up front and Carlson on the back line was goalie, Braden Holtby, who sat on the bench for their very first 2018 postseason game. After that Caps Game 1 loss in OT to Columbus with Grubauer in net, Holtby, despite the Caps also losing Game 2 in OT, went the rest of the way. His 2018 NHL playoffs best, in his sprawling stick save on Alex Tuch in the closing 2 or 3 minutes of Cup Finals Game 2 at Vegas, was the turning point of that Finals, in maintaining the Caps 1 goal lead to tie the series at one win each. |

As wacky as it sounds, there is evidence that it works. If administered in treatment centers combined with counseling, studies show that many addicts gradually wean themselves off the juice. Works better than the US (for profit)prison punishment system that has a near 100% rate of getting hooked again upon release.
Read this great book a few years ago that changed my view. Decidedly a left-leaning slant, but otherwise well written.
