I agree for the most part. When taking into account the JVR signing, the kids in the system, and the contracts we're going to have to give in the upcoming years, it will just be a matter of odd man out. The only problem with trading him now vs. the trade deadline is his recent down numbers affecting trade value. If he can show some improvement at 5v5 and that he's recovered from surgery, trading him at the deadline is the smart move. It'll suck to see him go, but it's gonna be necessary.

I think saying it's gonna be necessary is an overstatement. There are a number of good reasons for trading Simmonds for sure. But necessary? I don't buy it. I also don't buy that Simmonds is not capable of rebounding. A healthy Simmonds is still fully capable of producing at 5 on 5 with the right linemates.

Simmonds was healthy during 16-17 and he was a replacement level player at 5 on 5 that year too

FWIW, I hate the term "replacement level player." Are you saying that, at 5 on 5 play, that Wayne Simmonds and Chris VandeVelde, or an AHL/NHL tweener, were essentially the exact same player? Because I would not.

Agreed. A better description would be that he produced at ES at a level that was below average for a top 6 forward. Replacing Simmonds contribution at ES isn’t really the issue. The question should be is what Simmonds brings to the table on the pp and in “the room” worth extending him for what will likely need to be at least 5 years and 35 million.

I don’t think it is and if it were up to me, I’d trade him.

I feel like we're getting into semantics here, but I don't see a scenario where we can keep a productive Simmer. We have roughly $34M in cap space for 19-20 (before cap adjustment). We're gonna have to fill 4 forward spots (I'm assuming TK is the only lock to get resigned), 1 D spot, 2 goalies, and new contracts for TK, Sanheim, and Provy. Then in 20-21 Patrick, Lindblom, and Hagg will need new contracts. If Simmer comes back to form, he will be too expensive to sign to the kind of deal he'll deserve.

Since Lou always emcees the ceremonies for the various figures the Flyers honor, it would be kind of neat to see someone else emcee on the night Lou himself would be honored.

And that someone else should be Dan Baker.

Hextall is smart to wait and see how Simmonds looks this coming season before making any decisions.

Still no sign of Mason getting a contract anywhere. Hopefully he's not the next Bryzgalov, going from Flyers starter to out of the league in two years.

After having seen both Mrazek and Mason up close, I'm baffled as to why Carolina chose Mrazek and not Mason when they needed a goaltender.

Really? LOL Simmonds ranked in the top 40 in the NHL among RW's for EV point production.

Despite the fact that we have an abundance of goalies..I mean, if he has been humbled enough to agree to a split-time job, he'd probably be an upgrade over either one of our 2 NHL goalies.

It's one of the dumber terms that have come out from the analytics crowd. Along with thinking that the stats of a player when he is on the ice is independent of his teammates.

Are you talking about actually producing goals and points? Because if so, that's all hogwash and smoke and mirrors. You really need to look at his attempted shot differentials at 5v5 per 60 minutes when there were 9 other skaters on the ice.
