Justin Lowe: Stan #Legend
I never had the pleasure of watching Stan Makita play hockey live. Thanks to the year I was born, I didn't even watch him on TV.

What I do remember was ever since I started following this Blackhawks team as a young gaffer in the 80's, the legend of Stosh reigned supreme.

Over time as a Hawks fan, I have consumed as many games and highlights as possible from past eras, which was hard to miss gameplay from the impressive 22-year run Stan had, all with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Posted on last blog regarding signing Brouwer:
I would if he was cheap. The Hawks will probably have 4 or 5 players in the NHL that would benefit from more time in Rockford. I think Kahun, Edjsell, Sikura and Kampf would all be better off in Rockford, and I think that right now, they will all get significant time on the Hawks. If we could sign any (or all) of Nash, Brouwer and Shore on ONE YEAR deals, it wouldn't hurt us long term, and it would allow them to grow under Colliton for another year. IMO, that would be huge for our chances in 2019-20 and beyond.

Also, while I didn't see Stan play either (I was 3 when he played his last game), I've really enjoyed all the highlights and stories I've heard.

Got to see him play at the end of his career a few times, was a pleasure. My old man, bless his soul, thought Stan walked on water.
Kinda funny his 2 favorite players both named Stan Mikita and Musial -

Agree with all of those thing stated sign brower shore don't think nash would come if anything go to a contender on one year deal. The young players need to develop and be pushed ahead of schedule. R.I.P. Stan mister Blackhawk. Got a sighed hockey puck from him just class act and even better person.

I wouldn't do more than offer a PTO for Brouwer and kick the tires. If he accepts and comes to camp ready to compete, you maybe sign him for a year as a bottom 6 guy. He doesn't solve any issues in the top 6.

His best seasons are behind him and he doesn't have the elite skill to play beyond physical limitations. He was a bust in Calgary and likely would be a bust coming back to Chicago.

Hawks don't need more vets dragging their butts around while going through the motions which was the case for some of the returning ex-hawks recent seasons. Give him a chance to come and show what he can do, but he seems like another guy who's physical play has started to fade and with it, his effectiveness. I don't think Chicago really needs him.

Actually didn't Stosh play most of his career for the Black Hawks?

He was good 1 year. (Cup year.) Then he sucked for 20. (Based on the sentiment of most posters here.)

A shot and a goal. (RIP Stan.) You are loved.

Eddie Olczyk said Stan could have played in any era and I agree. If you've ever had a dog in the back yard that wouldn't come when called and you tried in vain to go catch it then you would know what it's like to be a defenseman and have to defend Stan.

I think he's referring to the Style/Spelling of the name. The "Blackhawks" werent the Blackhawks until 1986. They were the Black (space) Hawks before then.

Makita was one of my favorites as a young fan just beginning to watch hockey. At 6 or 7 years old my first memories are of the Lemaire shot that eluded Tony-"0" and ruined a series the Hawks should have won.

In my youth Tony Esposito was my favorite player, but Makita, Hull, Pit Martin were also followed and cheered as my favorite hawks.

Being Canadian, I only saw them 3-4 times a year when they played Toronto or Montreal on "Hockey Night in Canada". I would grab the schedule as soon as it came out to see what Saturdays the Hawks were in one of those cities!!!!

Makita will always be known as a true Hawk. Never played elsewhere, and played an incredible 22 years.

Loved ya Stan!!! Condolences to your family!

No Justin. You didn't miss anything. I think the Beaver is referring to the BLACK HAWKS that Stan played for became the Blackhawks in 1986.

Stan retired in 1980. Thus, he was always a Black Hawk, and never a Blackhawk....lol

A few years back, I was at a gas station in the Burr Ridge area and saw Stan filling up next to me.

I didn't want to be that guy, but I decided to go up to him anyway--would probably never have the chance again.

I walked over to him and introduced myself. He was as nice as everyone has ever said. Our convo lasted maybe three minutes. We talked about the Hawks (who were knocked out of the playoffs at the time) and how we both agreed that a little more grit was needed (yes, a HOF player also felt the Hawks lacked toughness at the time ) and how he was hopeful they'd turn it around next season.

We told each other to have a good day and "Go Hawks!"

I called my dad immediately. It was a good day.

Based on what everyone has said about him, I doubt he felt bothered. Given his life history, i'd be willing to bet he felt honored that you remembered him.

Great story and a great man indeed.

JL and I aren't the only ones who think Nick Shore deserves a look.

A lineup like that would be a big step up if Nash and Brouwer were still in their prime. Shore may not be the best option either but is likely who would be attainable and hopefully serviceable given the circumstances.

I generally like your lineup idea not necessarily because of the exact player acquisitions but to give is an idea of what would help boost the team.
