Justin Lowe: What’s on My Mind: Prospects, Possibilities and Ray The Blackhawks take to the classroom and ice today as they kick off their prospect development camp.

This sneak peek to Chicago's exciting future assets is a welcomed sight for this guy.

There is a lot of things on my mind this morning and it's a bit of a rollercoaster emotionally as I make my way into work. Here are just a few feelings.

thanks JL. I don't think this offseason has been a bad one for Stan. Look st it this way, he did not overspend for some iffy FA. I think, for what he was brought in for, Cam Ward will be one of the best signings of the summer, for all teams.

You can never go wrong focusing on hands and feet (skills and skating)! In today's game, those two are almost an absolute MUST, that coupled with the intangibles, great in any era of hockey, of head and heart (hockey IQ and flight or flight mentality) then you have got a winner. I am sure they will probably do some 3v3 drills during the practices because if you can play 3v3, you can 4v4, and so on in any other scenario. Remember during their long season, their is probably less focus or at the very least less time to work on drills as you have recovery time, injury, strategy, etc.

One has to keep in mind this is prospect vs prospect. In no way can success here predict success in the NHL vs pros. To better assess who's close and who is a project, come to Rockford and watch a few Hogs games. The competition and the coaching is closer to the NHL, and it's good hockey for an very affordable price.
I'm pretty sure Edsell will begin the season in Rockford, and depending on his adjustments and production he'd be a call up for injury or if the Hawks are out of the running, like last year, by Christmas. Ditto for Jokihuru. He may need a season or two before making it to the big club Playing against the best in the world on a nightly basis takes knowledge, experience and strength. All 3 are missing in most 20 yr old defensemen. Putting a kid on a top pairing can be detrimental to his development. It's not like Jokihuru has little to prove after a long time in the AHL or in junior. I think there is still a deal yet to come for a top 4 dman.

Not a signing, but this could be the year Kruger finally realizes his offensive potential. Maybe 25 goals from him?

Per Scott Powers’ piece on prospect camp from today - on Jokiharju: “it’ll be interesting to see what Jokiharju looks like. He’s been training back home in Finland with a strength coach and his father, who works with him on his skating. He has been said to have put on some muscle.”

EDIT: meant to post this as well - see Laz piece too where he talks about Jokiharju having the clear goal of making the Nhl team out of camp. From Powers piece:
“The question is whether there’s even a spot for Jokiharju. With Brent Seabrook, Connor Murphy and Jan Rutta set to be the right-handed shots on defense, there probably isn’t room for Jokiharju out of camp. One source said Jokiharju’s play away from the puck could use 3-4 months in Rockford.”

I'd be surprised if he spent the entire year up with the Hawks. I also read something that Portland would not likely contest it if the Hawks sent him to RFD.

It sounds like they really like what Colliton is doing there so I imagine he would spend the better part of a season there...for seasoning. Never say never though, I suppose.

EDIT - Just read your edit.

Yup. Pretty apparent they really like what Colliton is doing with the kids. Think the bit about no contest from the Wintehawks if J plays in the A came from Laz’s article, maybe? I read it too.

Won’t speculate but going swimming at 6 am as a grown man isn’t usually a good idea. Very sad to hear about razors passing. Outside of Ron tugnutt vs Boston in the early 90s that game vs Calgary where the hawks left him out to dry due to no legs was amazing to watch.

Prospects are just that. Fun to think about but until at the nhl level can’t say much.

No worries Justin. Panarin is coming back!!!!

Now that Jokiharju has been 'Hawk property for a couple years, I wonder if their talking about him more is both:
Natural progression of a young draftee, and;
A means of pre-empting too much talk about this year's new young draftees.

RIP Ray Emery.

Used to do swim in Lake Michigan very early morning to train for triathlons (with others) so there are good reasons for adults to swim at early hours in Great Lakes and he wasn’t alone. Going to simply mourn the passing of a great goalie and a complex man.

Then he has put on the 25 pounds of muscle that was predicted back in the day?

I feel tremendously sad about Ray for his family, friends, teammates etc.... However going for a swim at 6:00 am at a yacht club raises a ton of questions too.

well, i figure since he's having that surgery he is going to be laid up for a couple weeks for the most part. That'll slow his metabolism down and he'll start gaining some girth.

Now is the time for him to show the league his true potential.

Doesnt really matter does it? the guy died. Feel bad, or dont feel bad. do we really have to question and break everything down?

A younger version of myself would not be happy with the lack of in-game play. I used to hate practices when we didn't even touch the puck once or just did skating drills.

Funny how age shows how things hated at the time were so beneficial. Those bag skates and fundamental drills back in the day, baseball practices with zero batting practice too, ended up being the foundation from which you built.

Sucked at the time but without them there was simply no way to advance.

If Jokiharju is truly ready then Rutta can serve as the 7D giving him a rest on some back to backs. Odds are against Jokiharju starting in the NHL, but if he’s ready the team will make room for him.

Why? The guy sleeps on the yacht then wakes up to go for a swim. To speculate anything else at this point would be disrespectful to his memory.

And then trade him along with Boqvist, Schmaltz, Forsling and DeBrincat for Dutch!

Ryan Hartman signed a very respectable 1-year / 875k contract with the Preds.

Looks like he's hoping to build his game back up. Only problem is, I see him on the 3rd/4th line all year. Hard to break through with those kind of minutes.
