Oh? 30 years old and 5.5 million is a smart move in your opinion for a third line player? - GPHawksfan
30 isn't old and his cap hit is $4.3 million. #smartmoney |

I get that's an option, but then you're out the assets to acquire Pac and Anisimov alone won't do. Then go waste the cap space on over priced free agents and end up right back where he started, because let's face it gm's can't help themselves July 1 and don't say Panarin please because getting him back at 9 million isn't going to help this situation any. - GPHawksfan
Yea, but freeing up the cap space now and dropping it in the offseason allows you to go out and sign back Pana..... I mean... it.... nvm. |

This isn't too bad of a move. I'm going to miss Vinny, but we needed to clear up cap space and dump the Hossa contract. With the amount of space available now, if you need to, you can get two guys like Vinny. Plus getting getting back Krugy, with help fill some holes down the middle, but I would like to see another dependable and responsible D-man, and Osterle definitely did not fill those characteristics.
Let's see what else the GM has planned. My interest has been restored in this off-season. |

I asked them and got this response:
Those are roster predictions on our part. If we were to leave every waivers required player in the majors during the off-season, the numbers wouldn't be representative whatsoever of where the team will be at season start - walleyeb1

Bizarre trade. Moved Hossa, but took back a heavy contract in Kruger. So not sure how this is a great gain. Who cares about Osterle and the Maletta guy will never do anything....McKenzie Entwistle, who knows. I guess he has some upside. The D-man is just fodder.
It was really Vinnie for Kruger and about 2 and some change of cap space by switching out Hossa for Kruger. Kruger has looked washed up for 2 years now so he'll fit in the back to the future motif the Hawks are employing at current.
The negativity aside, this trade COULD be a boom if one Marcus Kruger can get his poop back together. This is a bottom 6 center who was good on draws, a great PK guy and stellar in his own zone. I've been barking for a bottom 6 Center who can win draws. Did Bowman get that? Not sure yet, because Kruger has looked awful lately, BUT the guy is only 28, battled some injuries so maybe there is some gas in the tank. But Bowman's track record in getting Hawks retreads and guys coming off injuries is not that good. But all we can do is wait and see. |

Hossa $5,275,000
Hinostrza $1,500,00
Oesterle $650,00
$7,425,000
Kruger $2,775,000
$7,425,000
- $2,775,000
$4,650,000 extra cap space, I guess!

Not really, you have to backfill Vinnie's spot. He was going to make the team this year, likely as a Third line winger.

This trade was all about dumping Hossa's contract so they could actually use his $5.25 million in cap space for the next 3 seasons. For one season Kruger's $2.775 million is on the books, hopefully he's recovered well enough and motivated enough to resume his 4C duties. Worst case scenario is he's waived and goes to Rockford, he cap hit would be only around $1.75 million (still a cap savings of $3.5 million this season).

Maybe Kahun can take that spot now?
Kruger has only 1 year remaining. Big deal. I liked this move by Stan.

Don't forget, Hossa still has three years left on his contract so in comparison to Kruger, its the Hawks getting rid of $15.825,000 for Kruger's $2,775,000. You have to look past this years cap savings. |

Another major mistake trading Hinostroza. Huge mistake. - Savoy
Why? He is one dimensional. |

I get we all like Vinny....but if losing Vinny also freed us from the Hossa contract...and therefore gives us space to acquire some impact player(s)....then it was a great deal. I thought all along the price for trading Hossa contract would be a first rounder. I was wrong...but Vinny is pretty close. And I am totally fine with that. We really just shaved off $16 million in space. And we did not lose a 1st or 2nd round pick...nor did we lose Schmaltz, Cat or Sikura...or any of our young d-men we have recently drafted.
This was a very good trade by Stan.
Now, finish the job and acquire one or two more impact players with the cap savings. |

Interesting comment:
Asked about role with Hawks, Hinostroza said: "It changed every night as a young guy there's a lot of pressure you never really know what you're going to be asked what to do that night ... I'm excited to just be able to go in and play my game and not worry about stuff like that." |

My reply if he was Patrick Kane his role would not change. 4th line guys need to be flexable |

Sounds like a variation of Hartman's criticisms which likely lead to him (Hartman, not Hinostroza) being traded because he supposedly yapped too much to coaches and/or management. IIRC, Hartman didn't think certain players were being used properly, whether positions played or line slotting. Could be wrong about this next part, but he may have even felt some of the core players would keep playing no matter what mistakes they made yet younger players would make one mistake and ride pine the rest of the game. |

Good trade. Frees the team from Hossa's contract. Maybe Kruger regains some of his previous form (like I'm hoping all of the returning vets do) but if he doesn't, not a huge deal. Maybe one of the projects turns into something. Giving up Hino was better than giving up TT for Bickel a few years ago.
Now Stan needs to do something positive with that cap space. |

I agree totally. And from a financial perspective I think Bowman did solid work here. On the hockey side? Hard to say.
Coyotes know what they have....a terrible D-man and a nice bottom 6 winger who great speed but lacking in size and elite skill to play along top 6. They are what they are.
Hawks DO NOT quite know what they have. YES, first thing they get is cap relief. HUGE win. Two other little things that could really push this trade to favor the Hawks.
---If Kruger can assume a capable L4-C role, lead our PK and win draws. HUGE WIN
---Morgan Entwistle. Third round pick last year, almost PPG in OHL, only 18 and is still filling out his 6'3 frame. Wiz had a nice write up on him earlier in this thread. Those interested should check it out.
Bowman addressed immediate bottom 6 Center needs and ALSO added a solid prospect to the mix. I don't think Hawks fans, including me, can hate this but so much. |
