I was born and raised on the south side. My dad took me to my first game when I was in 4th grade in the 1964/65 season. I remember we beat the Canadiens but not much more than that.

We went on a bus with a group of people from a local tavern named Triangle Liquor. I was shocked to see my teacher board the bus. She came over and told me I didn’t have to worry about my homework since I was going to the game.

Unfortunately my Dad has already made me do my homework, he’d never let me get away with something like that.

Been a fan ever since. My dad was a Chicago firefighter, I live in central Illinois now, so when I’d go up to see a game when I was younger I’d go up and back to a game the same day.

The guys at the firehouse on Madison let me park in their house lot and I’d walk down to the game.

Now I’m too old for that up and back in the same day stuff. If I go up to catch a game now I stay overnight, two of my boys live in Chicago so I either stay with one of them or at the Marriott in the medical district if I go up with a friend.

So I've been itching for some hockey and found the Chicago Pro Hockey League at MB Ice, $5 tickets for two games tonight.

Game 1: Debrincat/Kahun vs Bollig/Pirri/Hartman (Saad, but not tonight)
Game 2: Louis/Hino/Oesterle/Jokiharju vs Dzingel/Schmaltz

I enjoy watching high school hockey, so this will be a good time. I also haven't watched much of the prospects, what type of game play should I expect to see out of Kahun, Louis, and Joker?

I read up on the league the other day, and if I read it right, they play 4-on-4 in regulation and 3-on-3 in overtime, so it will be a lot more open skating and playmaking.

Thanks for the info, that I was not aware of. I decided to read a little more into it (just saw the tickets on twitter and got some). Seems very interesting and probably some of the first hockey they'll be playing since the season ended. I'm sure there won't be big hitting, if any, but that should then emphasize some hands and slick goals. It's cheap, with some proceeds going to local charities, and will have some head turning moves. If anything, we're just that much closer to real hockey.

The day the old man let Bobby Hull go my dad swore off the Hawks. Wasn’t until late 2000’s that I got him to go again.
- tyweb69

I did exactly the same. Hockey died for me when they let Hull leave and the game wasn’t reborn until Wirtz passed

It looks like Kendall Coyne is on one of the teams playing tonight. Along with all of the Hawks prospects/players, it would be interesting to see how she does in this setting. One of the few times I'm mad that I moved to CA. I think the whole concept of this league is really cool, and would like to see a few games.

We are looking forward to seeing Kendall play too. We are going on 8/1. She just got married on the 7th, so not sure she will be there tonight. My wife works with her godmother, so we got to meet her a few months ago. My hockey player son got to wear her Olympic medals, which was really cool. She has signed a bunch of stuff for him since they won the gold. She was very nice.

That’s what I thought - and it’s why all of the talk about how low / nomtax states have such an advantage in attracting free agent athletes to their jurisdictions is a bit overblown- that state tax differential is at least some evened out.

But I don’t know why the signing bonus amount would not be subject to the “jock tax” - it’s income earned as a contracted player, just like salary.

- StLBravesFan

This may have already been answered, but pro athletes are paid on a per game basis, not a standard weekly, bi weekly basis.

The bonus is a bonus. It would typically be domiciled in home state. The game salary is what is taxed per event.

Bonus is earned when paid. Typically at signing.

I think so. He's relatively cheap for a year. Adds a viable LW. He needs to prove something. If things go really well, sign him to an extension, if things go really poorly, trade him at the TDL. If things go meh, just move on after a year when the youngsters are a year older. don't give up much for him though.

Maybe lines for start of the season:

Saad towes dcat
Nash smaltz kane
Hayden AA hino
Martinsin grant kuniz
X forward surprise player out of camp or trade

Keith ?
Murphy Seabrook
Manning rutta
?
Crawford if healthy
Ward
3 or 4 question marks so we will see what happens. Not a bad line up of forwards d needs help not a contender but maybe a playoff team seated 8th

As much as I think they both should be in Rockford to at least start the year, I think you see at least one, if not both of D. Sikura and Edjsell in the lineup.

I know others aren't, but I am expecting really good things from Gustafsson this year. He's just 26, already has the offensive tools, and just needs to hone his D-game up. I think with the short contract he puts in the work to improve there and ends up a solid top 4.

You've been to the arena in Des Moines? Am told it was a madhouse, in fact I understand the nickname is Madhouse on Hickman, back in the day? ..... Wild place in an old building that was intimidating to both opposing teams and fans. Pretty sure they still have the short glass along the sideboards, old school.

Ex-NHL goalie Scott Clemmensen just bought the DM Buccaneers. Born and grew up in DM.

No never been there. I've been to young stadium which can get rowdy. When the riders first started it was called the rough house on rockford and they had a tough team with Gerry hickey and Jeremy Wilson and the fans were crazy. But then the coach Carlson after they won the cup with abdelkader and Alex Martinez started getting the majority of players under 6 foot and 160 pounds. The team was sold and went more family friendly and strict with fans. I quit going when they past the 15 min fight rule. My work used to get two rows of seats now they get just six total because all it is are little kids running around not paying attention to the game and concessions are really expensive

Not following you, vandy. Where in Iowa are you talking about? Young Arena is in Waterloo, the Roughriders play in Cedar Rapids and the Buccaneers play in Buccaneer Arena in Iowa (Madhouse on Hickman).

And you are correct though I've never been there I heard Lincoln is one of the finest places to watch a game.

From The Athletic:

Coyne knows a lot of the players in the league from having either played with them growing up or just training and skating during the summers.

Ryan Hartman, a Nashville Predators forward and Dundee Crown native, has known Coyne since their childhood days and was excited to learn she was going to play in the summer league.

“I think it’s great,” Hartman wrote in a text. “Growing up, my whole hockey career she skated with us in practice. Most the time she would be the most skilled player out there. She is very competitive and would push the pace of our practices constantly. Would have taken her on our team any day. Watching her game since I was young and throughout her career she can compete with the best of the best.”
