The flip side to the question is why the Islanders give up picks and prospects for him, with the goalies and the D the way it is, Pacioretty makes very little difference, that team needs to hang on to those picks and prospects, if Long Island is his preferred destination above all else, he can just sign there next year, that's why a trade to a contender makes more sense at this point, a team who will have him for a cup run this year

You're right, Pacioretty will sign an extension with NYI as soon as he's traded there, just like JT stayed... Another reason the Islanders would be stupid to make a move like that

To make him play with a true no1 center in Barzal. Pacioretty was able to score 35 with David Desharnais lol. Barzal is one hell of a playmaker, combine these 2 with Lee, Bailey or Eberle and it's a pretty good first line.

Also, nobody said anything about NYI giving prospects and picks. Bergevin likes Beauvillier and he's not considered a prospect anymore. He's part of their future but if we're able to sign Pacioretty long term before trading him, it might be worth it for them if they see more value in him.

Only Anders Lee can fill the puck with goal, but with Tavares gone, it might be a different story. Bellows and Wahlstrom will probably help putting pucks in net, but nobody knows when they will and how good they will be.
