I hope they are, but the Flyers are not going to be "really" challenging for the cup anytime within 2 years... Karlsson is 28, and 31 when the Flyers are "ready". On the other hand... Ghost is 25, and will be 28 when they are ready. Karlsson might be a slight upgrade right now, but maybe not in 3 years.
You can argue stats all day... Nobody mentioned age, ice-time, etc... The stats are similar. Both are valuable PP quarterbacks. The Flyers don't "need" Karlsson in the longer term view - if your subtracting Ghost. If the Flyers could swing a deal that does not rape them... Then he'd be a welcome addition.
The Flyers have; money, cap space (limited not long term), several prospect defensemen, Simmons (hate to lose him), and with good amount of prospects at the farm - they could burn high round pick. Hextall is committed to the future, I doubt that he'll burn up too many resources to land Karlsson. - leon neon
No one doubts that Karlsson is the best offensive dman in the NHL. He is a 10 offensively.
Defensively he is maybe a 5. Maybe.
If Karlsson is a 10 offensively than Ghost is pretty close behind.
He is top 5 in the league and really just hitting his stride.
Now that they signed JVR, the flyers number 1 issue last yr was what d pairing do they put out up a goal, with a minute left and to kill penalties at crucial points of the game..
They simply don't need more offense from dmen especially considering Sanheim and Myers will prob also assist with moving the puck and helping offensively from the back end.
You don’t win in the playoffs by playing 80 Oilers hockey.
The team needs a reliable dman in their own end, penalty killing, a third or 4th line center assuming Frost does not make the team and obviously some healthy and or better goaltending.
Karlsson helps with none of that. Karlsson also is not really that much better in his own end than Ghost.
He is better, but not good enough that its all that relevant.
I am not sure I would trade Ghost straight up at under 5 mill for Karlsson at 11 mill and they want teams to take on Ryan's contract which is asinine.
People will flip out reading that, but the goal is to win a cup not a win a fantasy champion.
No one is doubting how good Karlsson is, but the Flyers already have a guy that is prob the most comparable dman to Karlsson in the league and he makes chump change.
Trade would make no sense.

Why would they not be contenders anytime soon? Look at the potential lineup
Giroux-Couturier-Konecny
JVR-Patrick-Voracek
Lindblom-Laughton-?
Raffl-?-?
Provorov - Karlsson
Morin - Hagg
Gudas - Sanheim
Elliot
Neuvirth
Goaltending leaves much to be a desired but that top pair should be good enough to compensate like how Pronger did with Leighton in 2010

Shayne Gostisbehere 2017-2018 stats
13 G, 52 A, 65 P, +/- Plus +10
Erik Karlsson 2017-2018 stats
9 G, 53 A, 62 P, +/- Minus -25
Gostisbehere was also the only defenseman in the NHL to crack the top 10 in powerplay points last season with 33. When Karlsson is on his game, he's the best offensive defenseman in hockey. But Gostisbehere is top 5 or even higher. When I say Karlsson isn't THAT much better than Gostisbehere, I'm not just talking out my ace. Maybe you should do some research next time before you dismiss what somebody's saying as retarded. Troll. - TonyBazz
TonyBazz is the first one to make sense on here. He is totally right! Compare stats, cap hit and age and Ghost is the better option. Not really that close. |

YES!!
And since when is Karlsson a good defensive player? The big talk in Ottawa during the Vegas expansion draft was whether to protect Marc Methot or not. He was Karlsson's defence pair for years and covered up a lot of Karlssons defensive deficiencies......Vegas took Methot aaaaaand Karlsson was minus 25.

ill take this cheaper lineup which provides the flex to make moves at the deadline depending on where they are at w their intentions with Simmons
Giroux-Couturier-Konecny
JVR-Patrick-Voracek
Lindblom- Frost - Simmons
Raffl- Laughton - Weal
Lehtera, Weise
Provorov - Hagg
McD - Ghost
Gudas - Sanheim
Folin, Myers when ready right and left d may need to be switched... |

100%. also prefer to see the flyers focusin on dumping Gudas and backfill with a steadier even more experienced short term option. I would prefer for them to focus on that and dumping their number 2 goalie as well.
who the heck can kill pks on this team?
Orpik maybe?

You answer your own question. Number one reason that the Flyers have not won a cup since the 70's is goaltending.
Also... Morin is a rookie.. He will make mistakes. Gudas is Gudas. Hagg and Sanheim still aren't "seasoned". In a couple years... Morin Hagg and Sanheim (even Myers?) will be regulars. Gudas/AMAC will be gone. As for the forwards, Patrick will continue to grow - next year won't be his best year of his career.

Not even close. You gotta factor all facets into who's the better option. Not just career years. |

Flyers explorong Karlsson Optiions. “Full force”
Told by a source that the Flyers may be exploring a trade with Ottawa to land Erik Karlsson. Hextall is trying to make a major aquisition and was upset he couldnt get in on Tavares. The Flyers have all the right pieces to make this trade possible and I am told Philly is a team Erik has expressed an interest in playing for. - HockeyBuzz
