Why are we panicking? Mueller can be just as good as Dehaan if given the chance. Don't get fooled into this free-agency BS. All these players are getting overpaid by terms and years. Maroon will probably get a 4 year 20mil contract and that would be horrible for the team who signs him (please not us). Unless your getting a superstar..aka JT...like Toronto did or if you feel this one player is the answer to contend for the cup (like Stastny in Vegas)....STAY AWAY FROM FREE AGENCY! We are still building here and we need to stay the course with good drafting and great trading by Shero. In free agency we should be looking for cheaper players on short deals (maybe a Versteeg, Stewart, Davidson, Enstrom etc) or try an find a diamond in the ruff (Maybe a Duclair or Siemen). Devils are finally doing the right thing and staying far away from these bad contracts.....I don't want another Clowe

It wouldn't surprise me if the Devils went into the season with the same defense core they have now. They invested a decent amount in Mueller in a 2nd round pick and signed that Russian guy. It's not great, but I think Severson is better than what he showed last season and Butcher should be fine in a bigger role. I think the defense got better when John Moore left. If the Devils can get adequate play out of the group of Mueller, Lovejoy, Santini, Gryba and Yakovlev, well they won't be good, but maybe it won't be a train wreck.

I'm more worried about the forward group though. Scoring after the top line was a major issue. I thought more than anything that's where the Devils struggled against TB. Even if Maroon is re-signed, they'll either need to hope Zacha and Bratt show more than they did last year or that another prospect comes out of nowhere to make the team. That's why I'm hoping for a trade. Panarin would be nice, but I'll happily settle for Niederreiter.

No he can't. De Haan is a good top-4 defenseman. Possibly even a borderline top-pairing guy who signed for reasonable term and money. I'm not even sure Mueller is an NHL player, certainly not a good one.

Hamhuis wouldn’t be the worst option in the world, I wouldn’t want to give him more than two years though.

Dehaan is a decent defenseman, I go to plenty of islander games since I live right next door, and he's not a top pairing defenseman and is a borderline top 4 because the Islander defense was a mess last year. Trust me we dodge a bullet with him and I like him personally but he's worth between 3.5- 4mil tops and I think he kind of reached his ceiling. As for Mueller, yes right now Dehaan is better but he's only 23 and I believe if he never got hurt last year he would of been in our top 4 by the end of the year and he makes a lot less money.

Todd he was playing good right before he got hurt, yes I know he had his problems when he came back but lets give this kid a real chance here. I'm not saying he's a top pairing defenseman but is Dehaan?

If Mueller and Lovejoy are in our top 6 next year, we are in a bad way.

I disagree on Mirco being labeled as bad. He hasn't been given enough of a fair shot IMO.

Problem is the cap went up enough that no one needs to make a move. The only way we get a face card on d is if we give up a ton to get it.

Mueller is so so young. It takes plenty of defensemen longer than age 23 to find their footing, especially those who haven't seen the light of day for several years after draft.
I understand Santini showed pretty well in a tough stint in the NHL, but there's little reason to consider him a prospect but Mueller a finished product. They're the same age.

I agree 100% with you and I didn't even say Mueller was better then Dehaan. I just want to give this kid a real chance here before we say he "sucks". My post was to point out here that people are acting like we just missed out on OEL or Karlsson. It's Calvin Dehaan who was part of one of the worst defenses (no the worst) last year in hockey. Yes he a decent player and yes I would like him on my team but not at that price. Devils don't need anymore mediocre players, we need to find top talent and that's either through drafting or trading.

edit: people thought Victor Hedman was a bust after 4 years but look at him now (please, I'm not saying Mueller is going to be like Hedman)

In general I agree with you.

I will say though, it is completely unfair to say anything about last year's Isles defense was on CdH. The defense was considerably worse once he went down with an injury. The price and term on the new contract are more than reasonable and no, he is not a mediocre player. It's nothing more or less than unfortunate that we couldn't sign him

I am soooooooooo Glad some of you are not our GM..

If we stand pat we will miss the playoffs . that leads to players like Hall not wanting to sign with us ONE and out in the playoffs is not the goal.

Remember we just made it and Hall had a remarkable season. BUT >>> he needs help. On the backend and secondary scoring .

The notion that you need to be very cautious in free agency is absolutely spot on.

Sign Maroon .......... 4 yrs 4M same as Perron got in St.Louis.
Must trade or sign a Dman . preferably Righty.

Can not Stand pat.or do I think we will. SHero has not yet.

My advice was not to stand pat and do nothing but it was not to overspend in free agency. I do believe Shero is up to something but it makes me think a trade then a big free agent signing.

Stone is available, 2 years left at only 3.5 mill per & will be relatively cheap, 3rd & 4th round picks probably get him. Might be a fit
