"The Flyers may or may not extend a player that is currently under contract to them. More to come at some point in the future."

Top-notch coverage, folks.

Didn't Hextall say at the draft, when asked if they were going to try and trade Simmonds, that he was going to sign him?

He's a great player. Philly would be wise to offer him another 3 years.

Doesn’t he still have another year on his contract? Doesn’t seem super news-worthy.

No reason to do this yet imo. Unless he’s willing to sign another ultra team friendly deal

I would love to sign him for 3 more years but I would be very surprised if he accepted that short of a contract.

I'm taking this report as stated... the Flyers are HOPEFUL to re-sign Simmonds... not that they WANT to re-sign him.

I'm hoping that the buzz is leaning to a favorable deal for both sides. The other day Bill Meltzer a a great blog on HB detailing how Simmer is much more valuable to Flyers than merely his scoring ability.

The thing is getting his services at a reasonable Cap and term for both team and player.

Well, sure, but I’d that really newsworthy or even a rumor on July 3? There’s a lot of teams hoping to re-sign players next season.

I think he'd understand. He'd be 33 at the end of that contract, and while there's still plenty of grit left in him, it would put him at a point to decide if he wants extensions, as well as allowing him to decide whether or not he wants to keep committing his body to type of abuse he typically suffers in a season. I mean, look at the litany of injuries he powered through this year alone.

But 3 years us long enough to say we still want you with us, while not handcuffing him or the team to a 5 or 6 year contract.

Basically, it gives the Flyers the best years he can offer, and keeps everyone happy.

At his age, it’s clear Simmons wants long term stability and a good payday. His stock is high right now and if Philly can’t meet him in the middle somewhere, I think they intend to move him before the season starts. Similar in some ways to the Erik Karlsson deal in Ottawa. I would love to see him stay in Philly. He’s just a good all around player.

If it's suggesting that they are making enough strides for them to be hopeful, then yes.

I'm hoping that that is the case... Why else post it?

I'm taking it to be more than merely the Flyers are going to try. I'm taking it as the Flyers appear to be optimistic on getting it done and not thinking of having to alter their course and move him. In this case, 'no news is good news' just doesn't cut it.

Of course, if it is baseless on Eklund's part, then I totally agree that it is NOT newsworthy.

I hope Simmonds stays with the Flyers. My only concern is length of contract. I expect him to have a big rebound season after playing injured last season. It would be nice to see him score without having to also be the Flyers "enforcer". There were too many times that Simmonds stuck up for his teammates and ended up getting 5 for fighting against against another teams 4th line player that only plays 8 minutes per game. His scoring is too valuable to risk in a fight.

I'm wondering if Hexy will try to bring in a veteran D-man? De Haan just signed with Carolina, so who else is out there?
