As a Rangers fan, I'll always appreciate what McD did in New York. He was the first LHD we could really count on to play quality minutes since Brian Leetch's heyday. But - he really hasn't been the same player since maybe 2015. And no, I doubt he will get any better. Although you never know. He can be pretty good, but he definitely has a ceiling. At this point, he's a second pairing guy who you can slap on a second unit power play and send some good PK minutes his way. Giving him a contract that long is really not good in the long run. But that's part of these negotiations. You have to give, in order to get. The Rangers had him on a pretty great team-first contract for a few years there, so there was no way he was going to do that again - and I don't blame him.

He'll play 4-5 years of this contract tops, then he's traded or bought out.

4 years x 5 million a year would be have been nice, but the market drives up the price. A lot of teams would love to get McD on their roster, so the price and term reflected the market. In a few years, it will be an albatross contract, but for now it's OK.

We just need to get Girardi the F out of here. Give Koekkoek his shot. Pittsburgh just signed Jack Johnson to a ludicrous contract and he's the only pylon in the league worse than Girardi. Maybe we can persuade the Pens to take on Girardi and Callahan : a Ranger's special. LOL.

I hate the length of the contact and the NTC part but the AAV doesn't bother me, its only about 500K more then what I would have liked. If the cap continues to go up than this contract wont be to hard to deal with in its later stages. I think the Bolts will get 4-5 good years out of McDonagh.

As for the rest of the article I think Yzerman will try to land a RD to play along side of Hedman via trade and if that doesnt happen I see them going with the following:

Hedman-Stralman
McDonagh-Sergachev
Coburn/Koekkoek-Girardi/Dotchin

Reunite the swedes as they play so well together then with Sergachev he thrived on the right side he moves over, putting him next to the responsible McDonagh will allow him to in essence play like Hedman and control the flow of the puck while McDonagh is there to clean up any mess. Now the third pairing doesn't look to good but giving those 4 an average of 10-12 minutes a night wouldn't be catastrophic

The term is too long obviously, i dont think anyone disagrees on that. The AAV is close to were i thought it would end up but optimistically hoped for 6 AAV over 6 Years. I think the real test of this contract will be this year. Each game he played for the lightning last year after the trade looked better than the game before it. I dont know about anyone else but that top 4 on defense is a pretty stout group and the bottom pairing will allow organization youth to see some ice time with minimum exposure because hedman/stralman wont have to play EVERY SINGLE important shift.

For a top 20 dman in the league, I like it! He had a rough year last year on a rough Rangers team that has been leaning on him way to much! The guy literally did everything from PK to PP to expecting to stop top competition AND score! On the Lightning his responsibilities and playtime should be reduced which should help him relax and stay healthy. I think he is going to enjoy being the #2 guy and not playing in the bright lights of NY.

I really wonder is Karlsson is a possibility for the Bolts this year. It would be interesting just not sure how it could all shake down over the next few years with contract extensions for all the guys. If its true they have given him permission to talk to the interested teams he can basically determine his next team by simply saying he will only agree to an extension with the team of his choosing then Ottawa would do their best to get the biggest return for him. I don't see Ottawa keeping him till the trade deadline next year just due to the situation. Will be interesting

AAV is fine.
Term is prob. about 2 years too long.
Player is good.

D-men like McD aren't easy to get, we took a bit of a hit on the contract but I can accept it.

Who is more valuable to Tampa: Palat or Johnson?

If you had to keep one (say if Karlsson was coming to Tampa) which one would you include in the trade and Why*

Potentially a great trade for both sides
(Zack Smith is one of the most underrated bottom 6 guys in the NHL imo; and I don't like him for some reason, but he's a great agitator + checking F)

To Ottawa

F Ryan Callahan
F Tyler Johnson or Ondrej Palat
F Brett Howden
D Braydon Coburn
D Anton Stralman [resigns 4 years @4.25m]
D Cal Foote
2019 1st [top 15 protected]

To Tampa

F Bobby Ryan [1.75m retained - 5.5 cap hit]
F Zack Smith [0.5 retained - 2.75 cap hit]
D Erik Karlsson

Kilron - Stamkos - Kucherov
Ryan - Point - Johnson
Gourde - Cirelli - Miller
Erie - Smith - Paquette

Hedman - Karlsson
McDonagh - Sergachev
Koekkoek - Girardi

Palat is more valuable. Both Palat and Johnson have a NTC though so neither will be moved.

We also don't have Brett Howden anymore. He was traded to the Rangers in the McDonagh trade.

Cant trade 2019 first, we owe that to the Rangers if we win the cup this year.

Howden was traded to rangers at deadline. Rangers or another team needs to help facilitate this trade

jesus. the 3rd team involved is what tricks me. i figured it would just be straight up like Sergachev , JT Miller, Taylor Raddysh , and 2020 1st for Karlsson.

I expect Callahan to NYR
I'm cheering for the team Karlsson goes to OR the leafs.

There's no way I'm cheering for a team owned by Melynk...

He was injured most of last year. He has the potential to be a banging top six winger but the injury bug continues to haunt him. Good mitts, skates well, plays physical, if only he could stay healthy.
