Hearing the #blackhawks are pursuing veteran forward Chris Kunitz

- mrpaulish

If they land him, might as well send Toews to the Islanders to get the rebuild started

Kunitz, seriously?

A lot of posters here commenting on the amount of money being played to players as too much. Why? That is what happens when you start off having cap space, and then the cap goes up by $5 million. Players get paid higher salaries. And seriously, you give up nothing to sign a free agent other than money. Many here commenting on upgrading via trade. That is all fine...but you are then giving up assets to obtain assets. And really, how many trades has Bowman really "won"?

On another topic I mentioned "IF" the Hawks want to move Hossa contract, they likely have to give up a first round pick to make it worth to some other team. I did not say they "SHOULD" do that. I am saying that is the cost of business. Many posters here think it is just a piece of cake to shave off $5 million in cap space. It is not. You have to pay up the butt to move that contract.

They will certainly LTIR Hossa again. Not as ideal as trading his contract, but better than nothing.

- onehundredlevel

How often has he been in this position - dealing from a position of relative strength?

EDIT: Roumeliotis last night
I believe Hossa's contract will get moved before the start of the season.

Lower payroll teams likely waiting to see how things unfold in free agency to decide whether they'd need to inquire about it to get to the floor. #Blackhawks may have a little leverage here.

Why?! He’s 38 and slow! Trying to replace the old man quota now that Roszival is done?!

^^this

Roenick was 177 pounds when drafted, but played bigger. Vegas was not that big of a team, they just never gave up all game. Don’t care if they are 6’5” or 5’5”, as long as they can play 200 feet and don’t give up on the play all good.

- Revco38

This x100. Not many of these kinds and with the Hawks worshiping at the alter of speed/skill hard to play against is #9 on their checklist when evaluating a player.

And it sounds like, per LeBrun, they were very interested in Plekanec, too!

You're really obsessed with size. Compensating for something?

For real. MF is older than me and my knees are killing me.

Kunitz had 0 goals in 17 play off games last season ? Just like the Hawks 0 post season goals last year

Been pitching 'em for quite a while.

Got a Delorean or Tardis I can borrow for a bit?
I'd have done things quite differently going back several years. Water under the bridge. Not sure this mess is "fixable" under this current regime. Yes, thrilled with 3 CUPS. And not happy either because I believe with some different moves, there should have been more. And now you've got some of the core that are past their prime.

- savvyone-1

If someone told you in 2006 you'd win not only one Cup but three, I imagine you'd have said, "I'll take it"...no?

More is better but I think people tend to overlook the three they won weren't exactly givens. Even 2010 which may have been their best iteration (debatable).

Three Cups have bought them time. Not saying Q or Stan should be safe if this season ends up being another one gone sideways; but I had 40 years of mostly disappointment with this team til 2010 so a little more time to right the ship isn't all that big a deal...for me anyway.

If 2015 was their last hurrah for a bit, I'm with Mr. P...winning three was awesome and was pretty much everything I thought it would be.

Remember when the Hawks used to be tied to the top free agents and not just the scrap heap? Good times....
- hawks2010

I may be wrong - but who was the last top free agent the Hawks signed?

Probably Hossa - back before the cap began determining who they could go after.

Hard to get top free agents with bottom financial availability.

Powers reporting Ward deal will be for one year and more than the 2.5 million previously reported.

• As expected, goalie Cam Ward will sign with the Blackhawks today, according to a source. Ward’s cap hit will be higher than $2.5 million as previously reported, though.

Ward at over 2.5 mil, Kunitz....what else?

Hawks #1 need may become a new GM

Still early though

Action picking up on Erik Karlsson trade talks in OTT. Some with teams prepared to take Bobby Ryan but some with teams not taking Ryan.

James Neal, though I don’t see the Hawks paying what will be the going rate.

Bobbie Mac follow up to the above
I’ll be curious to see how hard TB might push on Erik Karlsson. BTW, four of TB defencemen are UFA next summer. TB of course would be one of the teams not taking on Bobby Ryan.

Helene St. James @HeleneStJames

Red Wings poised to sign UFAs G Jonathan Bernier (3 yrs at around $3M cap hit) and F Thomas Vanek (1 yr, $3M). They almost had Cam Ward on 1 yr but he chose CHI

If Ward signs for 3, I would have preferred Bernier
