I'm just a little frustrated with this team right now. Alot of holes to fill, but the D is a total train wreck and needs fixing in a major way. As does the coaching on how those guys are utilized.

There seems to be a major disconnect. We continue to draft promising young defenders who will (hopefully) help the club in a big way in a couple years, but none of this does anything to help the current aging core that is starting to show some major flaws.

I too would like to see a move ANY MOVE, just so that the team shows some sparks of life, but realize that we could potentially do more harm than good by picking up yet another high priced player simply to make a splash.

Been doing some digging and heard the Hawks would like to keep Forsberg as 3rd goalie or in AHL if possible. They still see potential and don't want to get rid of him just to get rid of him. They just don't want to have to rely on him as a starter at times potentially next year.

Also, my guy said the Cam Ward thing makes sense because he's able to step in and play 40+ games if needed. He's been durable, even at 34 years old because he hasn't been tasked to play 60 games a year.

Also, he said, ward is a great guy and would be amazing for the locker room.

This was one of my big points regarding Ward--durable workhorse

Makes sense, if CC goes on IR, they will need someone to backup the new guy and it's better to have Forsberg on that duty, so they can keep Delia, Lankinen etc. in the minors.

It wasn't just Sheary for a 4th -
Sheary was the sweetener for Buffalo to take Hunwick. It's exactly like Teravainen was the sweetener for Carolina taking Bickell except the Hawks got a 2nd and 3rd back.

- L_B_R

A mediocre Matt Hunwick at 2.25m for 2 more seasons is a stark contrast to a crumbled Bickell at 4m per w/ 3 years remaining.

For me it all comes down to price and term. Ward is not my first choice (or second choice), but for the right price he does have some veteran experience that can be valuable. Who knows how he will do with another team and coaching staff. After watching Darling crash and burn after changing teams you have to wonder if the issue is really in net or if the issue is deeper than that. I personally think goalie coaches don't get enough credit.

I think if they do sign Ward is isn't about replacing Crawford. I.e. they feel Crawford really is going to be fine and they realize they need to address the backup role. If they thought Crawford was gonna really be out long term, I think they'd be aiming higher, IMO.

Question....if a player goes on IR for a rehab stint would that give a team additional cap space...

No specifics.

All goalie show right now.

However I can guarantee they are chatting to agents of players in all positions.

I don't really understand the whole "can play 40 games" thing. Forsberg can technically play 40 games if needed - he was only 5 off last season - but that doesn't mean anyone actually wants him playing 35-40 games at the same level as last season, right? Well, Forsberg last season had a similar or better sv% than 4 out 5 of last seasons for Ward. For the past 5 years, there have been about 41/42 goalies a year that play at least 30 games - Ward has been outside of the bottom 5 only once and that was him move all the way up to 26th.

What they need is someone who can play well, regardless of the number of games given.

I can't argue with your stats/numbers and I know we bumped heads earlier about this topic.

Personally, I would rather have Ward in the backup role than Forsberg for now. Ward has played behind a relatively lackluster team for years. Yes, Forsberg backstopped a rough Hawks team last year, but I think Ward brings a confidence that Forsberg lacks (right now at least). He also lost his job to Glass and Berube I Ward's confidence and play would be magnified in Chicago if they can bolster the defense a bit.

Forsberg seemed to get rattled a lot to me last year. Could be something he needs to work on in the AHL, or, it could be something Columbus knew and that's why they were OK throwing him into the Saad deal.

Who knows...

Bickell only had a season left.

And even if he didn't, it's still a deal in which a younger good player is used as a sweetener to move a bad player (calling Hunwick mediocre is too nice). But the fact that Hunwick isn't as bad as Bickell was is why the sweetener wasn't quite as good - after all, Teravainen was/is younger, cheaper, and better than Sheary.

Crow covered up a lot of those blemishes, so I'm sure a lot of guys could, too.

Hawks defense was certainly rough last year, but it was also more an issue of the ENTIRE team being awful.

-Not sure why I thought Bickell had 3 years left. My mistake! I completely understood your point, However I do feel that this is also a win for BUF, and at that price, Sheary is a nice addition. It seems like Jim Rutherford is clearing out to make some impact moves to compete NOW. * nudge & whisper "Stanley!.."
