I’m all for getting some size as well, but what happens if/when you draft all these 6’3” 220 lbs guys and they can’t skate fast/well enough? A lot of these guy said are 17-18 yrs old. They are going to get bigger before they make it to the NHL. I’d much rather get guys with speed, skill and know what to do with the puck instead of simply being bigger.

Mark McNeil?I remember fondly when he was drafted and the TSN crew stated that he had an NHL body and was good to go.

Grubauer got $10MM over three years from Colorado.

This “backup goalie thru free agency” tack is not going to end well for Chicago, I fear.

Then I spend money on a top 4 D and a legit 1B netminder first. Gotta work from the net out.

UPDATE:

I commented the same thing on twitter as well.

Hearing Hawks want to get feedback on a few free agents (Hutton and heard JVR, Neal and a "multiple defencemen" as well) before the go back to the trade market.

I've heard the Faulk proposal back from carolina is a little rich for their blood right now. They want to see what the free agency route could look like for them.

That also applies to Duclair and Jurco... if there is mutual interest from a couple UFA forwards, I heard those guys will not be qualified. I suspect only 1 will be back anyway.

Wonder what Neal is looking for? Good guy to get on a two year deal. He has some miles on him, but is a scoring winger with an edge.

Hawks need to get younger/faster, not older slower. Yea he had a good year last year, but I'd rather the Hawks focus on D and Center. Most of the good Hawks young guys are wings...ADB, Hayden, Saad, Sikura, Vinnie, etc...are they good enough? Defense and Centers are are not.

If Hawks were one slow footed but good shooting sniper away then sure, but he doesn't fit this team's needs to "retool" on the fly.

Correct! AA only produced when centering the line of Kaner and Breadman. Additionally. their style of gaining entry and being patient and holding the puck waiting for trailers helped out AA immensely due to his lack of speed.
- D2D

That’s a little extreme, he’s pretty much always been near the 40 point mark and has had four twenty goal seasons. Pageau has never had a 20 goal season. I wouldn’t make that trade, the kids trending downward.

He makes 1.4 less. Still isn't worth the best LHD prospect the Hawks have currently.
AA has put up those 40 points pretty consistently in his career. Pageau, who I have come to appreciate, is more of a 30 point guy.

Neal is no doubt going to try to cash in...I suspect he'll get 10 million over 2 years, perhaps to stay in Vegas.

The market, at this time, is a total unknown. I just don't think the Hawks should add another plodder to the team. If all the other pieces were in place sure, but too much work to do. They were not at the bottom of the league by accident. There is some serious talent deficiency in various areas.

So he sucks?

Well he is better at hockey than 99.99999999% of the combined population of the USA, Canada & Europe. So there’s that.

As side note - for CHI - We all have seen the jumbled reports of interest in Faulk (top 4 Dman), acquiring JVR (top 6 w), some goalie talk, moving 81 contract, clearing AA's $, a depth C, etc. It all would suggest that the FO is not content with the current roster and status quo, and understand multiple moves need to be made. Which we all know is for good reason, after last seasons resuts. Yet the lack of a single Change or addition to the current roster going into this coming season, and shortage of information on who the FO may have reached out to today, speaks glaringly to the contrary. Makes me very curious if it may be due to StanBo and the FO making a huge pitch for Tavares.. or working on a massive trade that would prevent other pieces from moving beforehand. It's very curious.. and too quiet.

I believe the lack of change was more due to the landscape settling down (EK, JT, PG, IK, draft, etc). Now they are on the clock for signing UFA's before July 1 when they can hit the open market. I think it will definitely start heating ala Cal/Car blockbuster trade yeaterday.

First of all, I said one of the young dmen, so it wouldn't necessarily be Forsling, I just wouldn'trule him out. Second, you say he consistently puts up 40 points, but he only did it once before coming to the Hawks. Last year he had 31 points.

Couple other things about AA, who’s going to plant himself in front of the net and take away goalie’ eyes and win the board battles?

Neal would be a good LW with Kane due to his proven finishing and slight sand-paper work ethic. However, I believe Smaltzy is better LW with Kane provided they get a 1C/2C to center those two. No not AA!

Enough with the cubs they 1 championship in a 108 years and treated like they gods.
Cubs are going to be the braves of the 90's get year after year get close but don't win another one. Come back to me when both the bears sox and cubs win multiple championships.

- Scott1977

They are the last team in Chicago to win a championship? For the what have you done lately for me croud. No matter how much you minimize it, it was wonderful. Hawks and Cubs org say the same thing, you can only put your team in a position to win a championship.

Exactly. I think that's why they are looking at the JVRs and Neals of the FA market. They need more of that net-front presence and/or replace Anisimov if he is moved.

However, I was told, don't be surprised if he's still here come fall. The same person was stating that getting another C and moving him to wing is an option as well for Joel.

Don’t know the answer to this, maybe someone else does. If we don’t qualify Duclair can we sign him for less as a UFA?

I heard yes. If they didn'tlike him... they would have just kept Kero.

He can be valuable in the AHL and with his NHL experience, in a pinch, I think could step up in a 4th line C position.

LeBrun:

No surprise given his season (.931 SP in 32 GP) but UFA goalie Carter Hutton's camp has heard from 8 teams today as the UFA speaking period opens. Obviously need to cut that list down and expand discussions over the next few days.
