They need one or two centers, one or two power forwards, two top four D, and a legit backup goalie.
Just not seeing Schmaltz as a 2C, AA....3C, maybe, and Kampf as a 4C is still very much an unknown.
JVR at $6.25MM is too much for not enough, and he will become yet another cap anchor if his term is much past three years.
None of these moves speak toughness either, and they only check one half of two boxes.
One thing is for sure though, the moves that do get made will give us insight into what kind of team identity the Hawks will have going forward. - Return of the Roar
Care to expand on this? I though Schmaltz was one of the few bright spots last season. He took a good step forward in becoming 2C. Besides FO's he was pretty good all around, and was more consistent than previous years. The guy has the ability to take over games, we should give him every chance to do so.
I read last night that the Domi for Galy trade was originally a three-team deal with the Pens involved--apparently sending Kessel to AZ - Hank3Henshaw
yeah, I read that.
Domi and Gali to Pens and Dylan Strome, Crowse, and defender on the Coyotes NHL roster to the Hats. (Demers is locked for three, Hammer?, Chychrun? maybe crappy Luke Schenn).
Discussion broke down quickly because its didn't get deep.
Each team tried to talk to Arizona and maybe Marc Bergevin was motivated by fear and stepped up...
I totally agree on taking Simmonds over JVR. The big question though, is what is it going to take to get Simmonds? I do not pretend to even begin to know what the Flyers would be looking for..I would guess the 27th pick would be part of it though.
I live in Toronto, and watch a lot of Leafs games, and while JVR is a good player, I think the physicality Simmonds brings would be a lot better. Plus, I think Simmonds could be signed for a lot less than JVR. Can you imagine the Hawks get Simmonds, Brady Tkachuk falls into their laps, then they sign Roussel? Talk about a becoming harder to play against overnight.
Vegas just wasted their first NHL draft (after a full season that is) on Tatar. While I'm sure they'd love to get their hands on a franchise dman, I can't imagine they're gong to sacrifice two years in a row of not drafting in the top two rounds.
They're a brand new team and need to stock the cupboard with top talent. Waiting until their third year in the league to start doing that is going to do them in further down the line. - Rinosaur
Theodore will be that franchise blueliner for them.

???
and they started last year and have plenty of bullets to do so in the future drafts
Their FIRST NHL draft yielded: Cody Glass. a really talented centre with big upside, almost a guaranteed pro, Nick Suzuki, a smaller but really talent centre who also looks like a lock as a future pro,
and
the smaller push defender Erik Brännström, who we all got a taste of at the World juniors and he looks like the real deal.
tin the second round the gambled on behemoth defender Nicolas Hague who has range,
and a second generation under 6 foot centre in Jake Leschyshyn.
in 2019 they presently have one 1st rounder and TWO seconds
In 2020 they presently have one 1st rounder and THREE seconds.
So just because they only have second and two fours doesn't mean the backslide in terms of development...whether Tatar makes a significant contribution or not.
So your sweeping statement of doom really doesn't apply.
They do need to improve from within, but this was truly the biggest hockey sports story ever, "...the expansion team that could..."

Strome, Crouse and Schenn - 3 cement shoes. Even Bergevin could turn that one down.

I liked him with Ducks from Day One...still developing...
and no one can tell me Nate Schmidt isn't a top four NHL defenseman, because that's what he has been asked to do.

the younger brother is the cement shoe...Dylan actually is making strides...if the Galchenyuk experiment ends, I bet he is the replacement and called up if he doesn't start there....

Thanks for the insight, Wiz!
Hey...what are you reading these days? The Plastic Man min-series started out pretty cool with issue #1 last week.

Watching Theodore and Tuch with the Wolves was a treat.
Those guys were multiple steps ahead of everyone else--you could see it.

Simmonds vs JvR is a tough comparison, both a good players but offer something different. I think we also need to look at the cost to acquire Simmonds. Is it worth #27 for one year of Simmonds? Or is signing a UFA the better option? I'd go with JvR.

I just don't see a deal with Chicago with Simmonds happening. I think Simmonds has a 12 team trade clause, plus I would assume Chicago would want Philly to take back salary and I don't see that happening.

I don't see it happening from a team chemistry balance...you wanna agree on a number and keep him.

The irony of the JVR situation in Toronto is their decision to sign good but late 30's Patrick Marleau for 3 years @ $6.25M (probably at Babcock's insistence) which kind of leaves not enough money to resign JVR at similar money over 5-6 years which they could have done last July.
One thing JVR would do is help the feeble PP; nobody better in the league at scoring from in tight. He has size but not much physicality. I've always thought of him as an underachiever with not enough fire in his belly but I could live with a 4 year deal if they rid themselves of AA.
One precaution to signing JVR, he was tenth in time on ice with Maple Leaf forwards last year. The guy is deadly on the PP in front of the net but he is mostly a third line forward 5on5. I wouldn't want him on a line with Kane or Toews.

The list of injuries Simmonds has had..and as physical as he's played, I'd pass. Especially because I think hes having surgery this off season (?)
JVR is a bit bigger and while not as physically reckless, hes a physical load to handle. And while they're the same age, I think because of their style of play, JVR will have more left in the tank and Simmonds, IMO, will decline quickly soon
