Justin Lowe: Bold Predictions on Draft Week
I know I’ll kick myself for this later, but hey, figured I’d have a little fun heading into the Entry Draft Weekend.

Below, I will list out 5 Bold Predictions of Blackhawks/non-Blackhawks predictions… for fun!

Not a fan of the JVR term, but this is better. add dehaan and cole in FA then all the hawks need is a 1B goalie

Sounds good Justin,
Myself, and probably a lot of others would agree with everything except switch the picks, 7&8, .I’d like to see them sign a little pain in the ass like Antoine Roussell also Along with everything else you have here.

Fun column this morning, Justin

While I can totally see Bowman dropping those famous words, I have a feeling they're going to make some serious moves before or at the draft...not sure why, just feel it coming.

Hey Justin, nice (realistic) predictions. Just a quick note: draft starts Friday, not Saturday.

I really like the Severson idea. I have for a while. Just don’t think NJ trades him as they are ready to take the next step towards contending so they’ll probably be focused on acquiring more immediate-help this offseason.

I think JvR gets something around 4-years; $5.5 mil if he’s acquired by the ‘Hawks, though $6 mil could happen if he indeed hits the open market. The E. Kane deal is not a benchmark for his contract as many have eluded to.

If Zadina is still around by the time Arizona picks, or depending on what Montreal would be looking for if they Finn is truly their target, I’d be willing to move up. It would be fantastic to have a young sniper in this organization that could step in day one.

Slot in a JvR and Zadina into the lineup, and the ‘Hawks all of a sudden have a lot of firepower up front and can focus their remaining efforts on adding a stay-at-home d-man and rounding out the bottom six however they see fit (Roussel would be a great add).

I am not a JVR fan, period! He will not make enough difference for the cost of his cap hit.

The Hawks will have money.

JvR could help the power play and a lot of net front presence. Plus the re recruiting of TvR next off season.

The Hawks are at this moment far away from being competitive in a playoff series. Lets see how this week goes.

JvR plus a top young forward then money spent on a top 4 D man or trade #27 for a legit NHL D man

I'm with you on Roussell. This team needs somebody that forces the other teams to keep their heads up. Since Andrew Shaw has left, there's virtually nobody here to create some aggravation and intensity, and I think we'd all agree that we'd like to see John Hayden expand his role as a scorer instead of this type of player. Roussell has always been a player that the Hawks hated to play against so if the money is right, why not.

And IF Ottawa keeps their 4th over draft position and goes defense, that clearly (to me, anyway) is a tell Karlsson is not resigning there and part of return will be Vegas’ first rounder so that they can fulfill the payment in the Duchene trade with THAT first rounder, not THEIR own 2019 slotted pick.

If Karlsson is staying, and Zadina does drop to the 4 slot,(because Montreal draft Jesperi Kotkaniemi) selecting him starts improving things sooner with additional scoring by 2019-2020 at the very least.

So for minute lets simply take the stand that the Senators also decide to draft for need on the backline.
Let us also assume they fill they are safer to not take undersized Quinn Hughes and decide on one of the bigger bodied guys, Noah Dobson or the guy who is a bit closer, Evan Bouchard.

This drops Zadina into Arizona’s lap. I know they were impressed with him as all-around player and solid attacker and his interview meeting only cemented it.

that gets us to here on my draft board:
6 Detroit Quinton Hughes D Michigan 5' 10" 176
7 Vancouver Noah Dobson D Acadie-Bathurst (QMJHL) 6' 3" 177
8 Chicago Brady Tkachuk LW Boston University 6' 3" 192
9 NYRangersOliver WahlstromLW USNTDP (USHL) 6' 1" 19

Now a lot depends upon Detroit and Vancouver feeling unique opportunity to snap quality defenseman prospects they are probably not going to get a chance to select in other drafts unless they drop in the standings or win the lottery.
In my heart Brady is gone, so Justin you maybe right on...with Ollie...

That's a lot to give up for Hossa's contract plus pyatt didn't play center last year I get getting rid of hossa's contract is essential as far as what type of free agents the hawks get. I would pass on JVR that's just my opionion rather make a bigger trade with Ottawa that includes pageau or stone. If the hawks can pick anyone of these 5 players in the draft at 8 I personally would be very happy. My list is from whom I want the most at 8 and then go from there:

Zadina (most likely won't be there)
Tkachunk
Kotkaniemi
Hughes
Walhstrom

My bold prediction will be the hawks acquire Nick Bjustad from Florida!!!

2.I am not sure Karlsson to Vegas is bold.

3. The hawks sending Anisimov in a pick flip is reason if Brady was hawk target and Jesperi the Hats.

4. Getting in on some Ottawa by sending lots a Rockfords on bigger NHL contract in a pick switch seems do-able from the Ottawa rebuild perspective but very bold.

5. Carolina actually filling the RD need by accepting the #27 is maybe even bolder.

I will know by tomorrow if the hawks #8 is in play...

I read last night that the Domi for Galy trade was originally a three-team deal with the Pens involved--apparently sending Kessel to AZ

I agree I dont think that is enough for Severson and if it is then well its certainly not exciting enough to make it worth the gamble. NJ is going to look to add picks but most likely by trading down from 17 to 20 or so if they think a guy they like will still be there then I see them doing that for an additional 2nd or third round pick.
They also didnt make trades at the deadline to make the play offs for Hall only to make it a lot harder on themselves to make it the fallowing year. The Devils might also look to cut ties with John Moore so if that were to happen I couldnt see them moving a cap friendly young rh defensemen for a 27th and change.

First of all, Pierre Dorion is a weak man...

That being said, VGN will have to give us a package of at least Glass, 2019 1st, Tuch or Haula and Theodore

That's what Dorion and Melnyk can sell to Sens fans..

Who are those kids you proposed in the Hossa deal?

Vegas just wasted their first NHL draft (after a full season that is) on Tatar. While I'm sure they'd love to get their hands on a franchise dman, I can't imagine they're gong to sacrifice two years in a row of not drafting in the top two rounds.

They're a brand new team and need to stock the cupboard with top talent. Waiting until their third year in the league to start doing that is going to do them in further down the line.

Somehow I doubt Melnyk could sell ice cream cones to children on a very hot day in Ottawa right now. A photo of him on his death bed would sell better.

Most of that package was probably available from Vegas at the trade deadline because it would have meant 2 playoff years with Karlsson before he became UFA. Not so sure anymore.

Who do you think they draft at #4?

If zadina is there I can't see them passing.. even though Dorion is stupid.. he usually makes decent decisions at the draft table... usually...

They need one or two centers, one or two power forwards, two top four D, and a legit backup goalie.

Just not seeing Schmaltz as a 2C, AA....3C, maybe, and Kampf as a 4C is still very much an unknown.

JVR at $6.25MM is too much for not enough, and he will become yet another cap anchor if his term is much past three years.

None of these moves speak toughness either, and they only check one half of two boxes.

One thing is for sure though, the moves that do get made will give us insight into what kind of team identity the Hawks will have going forward.
