If al these rumors are true, Columbus should put together a deal to pull Ryan O'Reilly out of Buffalo.
Not sure what Buffalo is looking for but in my opinion it would put Columbus right up there with Pittsburgh, Tampa, and Washington as the top contenders to come out of the east next year. |

My guess is he wants to sign somewhere specific . So a team trading for him will likely resulte in the cbj under selling him because there's no guarantee he signs with said new team. |

Could A. Panarin. For Max Pac and a second rounder (33rd overall) would do the trick ? |

Paul,
Best blog you have written in a long time, not that your other writing is bad at all.
I totally agree with you, I've been saying for months its time to go after Tavaras, and/or anyone else who can bring more offense to this team. Right now I get the feeling this is a negotiating tactic by Breadman's agent to get more $$$.
To another poster; why in the world would Breadman want to got to Chicago? they are a cap ceiling team that didn't get to the playoffs last year with a ton of money tied up in two players and a non-existent supporting cast around them? The last year he was in Chicago the Hawks were swept in the first round of the playoffs.
He is with a team that has a legit chance to win the Cup right now, who will pay him big $$$, it makes no sense for him to move.

I would go out and do everything possible to build a super team around Panarin. Make a big offer on a John Tavares or John Carlson; see if you can swing a trade for Erik Karlsson, or a Max Pacioretty.
That all sounds great in theory, but do we really have a shot of getting Tavares or Karlsson to come to Columbus? We have never had good luck getting high end free agents to come to Ohio.
Depending on his asking price, the best thing to do maybe to move Panarin for O’Reilly. But Buffalo may not want to take on what could be a nine or $10 million contract |

Not even within sniffing distance. You’re going to toss in a second rounder like a little bonus? You’re talking third overall a prospect and patch To get the conversation going |

My idea is Columbus keeps Panarin for the year, offer Buffalo picks/prospects. Load up this year and make a run at it. |

I think there's one single reason he may not want an extension: Tortorella. |

Why would Buffalo do that? Keep O'Reilly in the conference for 5 years for a return of table scraps |

If the Jackets are smart they'll fire Tortorella and hire Trotz. Tortorella is KNOWN for making players like Panarin unhappy. Not that you should always fire a coach because the players don't like him; that would be silly. However, Tortorella is not good at coaching skilled player. His system/style suppresses them. It somehow worked in Tampa for one year, but since then every team he's gone to the skilled guys' are miserable. |

Because the Sabres are not a good team, getting additional firsts and prospects will go a lot further for the swords than continuing paying O'Reilly 8 million and still finish bottom 5.
No disrespect, Florida, Columbus, NJ, Philadelphia,.... are a lot closer to really competing in the east. My opinion is Buffalo needs to go young and load up on picks and cap space.
Two years from today I'm betting the Sabres will be in the conversation. |

Way too much risk in an 18th overall pick for a guy of ROR's caliber. The Sabres need wingers, not more picks |

Unless Torts and Artimi are hiding this behind the scenes , Torts seems to always get a boner when talking about Panarin's play. |

I'm open to going after ROR, but something other than CBJ 1st & prospect has to go the other way to even out the $$$.
CBJ can't take on $7.5MM for 5 yrs without sending something the other way - maybe Buffalo has to take Dubinsky's $5.8MM for 3 more.
You have to leave room to pay Panarin, Bob, Werenski. Even with the cap increase, the CBJ would be up against it.
What about Duchene ?? I doubt he wants to stay in the dumpster fire in Ottawa !! He's a UFA in 2019, like Panarin, but probably less $$ to re-sign. |
