Give him time. lol

Florida gave up. He is the Canuckleheads problem now. Most drafting teams try to find those type of projects in 2nd/3rd rds. The problem is some get into the hype on size and overrate. Could pan out eventually. But at spot #3, a tough tough thing and FL ate it (besides getting killed by Vegas in expansion draft)

2012 draft.. most of us on here wanted Dumba or Trouba. We took Reinhardt.. I don't remember one of us talking about him going up to draft. No one.. and we all knew the prospects pretty well by that time.

In 2011 I wanted Couturier if he fell to us.. most wanted Dougie Hamilton. No one mentioned strome... no one.

in 2010 we all wanted Connolly and I was in love with Skinner and his 50+ goals in juniors. Once again no one mentioned Nino.

Maybe we should all do the draft.

I can barley watch the draft. No way I'm picking these players.

Remember: Isles fans also wanted Nikita Filatov, all losing their minds and walked out of the NHL draft party. (or wanted Luke Schenn... who was supposedly the next Pronger). So the revisionist history should also take into account sometimes. Keeps some sense of reality when we nitpick in 20/20 hindsight.

NHL drafts are hard. NHL orgs have a lot of work and staff that go into it.

Look the truth is the game evolved. I LOVED Gudbranson at the draft. But, the powers that be made the game about speed by taking out the two line pass, and calling anything interference. It’s an open game so that big sized d man is caught flat footed nowadays. I don’t even think they knew what the game would become. Or that was their way of taking fighting out of the game without making it a rule. Who knows.
Point is, i don’t mind a swing and miss once in a while. But not 4 at bats in a row. That’s inexusable

No argument on the latter part here.

NHL speed game was well-underway long before that draft and writing was on the wall for years and years. NHL speed game is nothing new.

I was at the Barn during that draft. Fans were chanting "Filatov Filatov" and the Isles traded down twice and got booed for it.

the other guy was Colin Wilson... who went to Preds. Bailey ended up panning out, though his development was mishandled, he was rushed, and it hurt his game.

Rushed??? More like TOTALLY mishandled. The isles drafted a playmaking center, and literally had him wearing ever hat up and down that roster. For what, four years he was a bottom 6 defensive forward. THEY DIDNT EVEN KNOW what his role was.

As was I. Buccigross, who I met that day, and the Isles ended the draft party early. It was a hoot.

The picks they got moving back also got them Hamonic.

yes, a playmaker was stuck with crap players and he had little to show for it. Then add him into your top 6... then... voila! If you have a stacked 3rd line that can score, he can go there down the line with his contract.

Yeah, cause Filatov had lazy Russian written all over him to me. That was the isles best draft. Other than Lee, Hamonic was their best “later” pick

Spurgeon in rd 6 in that year was even better than Hamonic. Isles dev screwed up letting him go.

It’s not adding him to the top 6, it’s being able to play with Tavares. But my point was players have roles. Those roles need to be defined. Bailey went from top line playmaking center, to wing, to bottom 6 defensive winger, and now top line wing. They had him for 8 years until they finally put him with JT. It was a microcosm of the learn on the job isles. Total mishandling

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t he not wanna sign with the isles?

Edit : i wouldn’t call him better if they drafted a guy who refused to take millions from the isles. lol

For the record, it’s not a coincidence that they finally gave Bailey top line minutes in his contract year. That’s got Snow (I’ll take care of you) written all over it. He got paid well after having a great year playing with JT. Wink wink

Incorrect. They were 1 contract under the limit and they decided to give it to Ness instead of Spurgeon. Garth Snow

Correct. The 50-contract limit bit Snow in the butt, because he failed to recognize Spurgeon's talent. Imagine that!!

Let’s also remember the fact that the isles had a Calder candidate (and most like winner) in Barzal, who because of one rookie mistake, was sent back to juniors. He shoulda made the team last year. He was putting up Tavares esq numbers in the Dub. Another joke.

That might have been the best thing for him in the long run as he has that hunger to be the best
