I can't believe this is a debate....

It's a bit silly... The simple fact that it never happens should be the first hint that it makes little sense

Exactly, Toronto will pay the price on July 1st if he wants to play there... But they won't lose Mathews or anyone else in doing so!

And if what you say is accurate, how come the Blues traded Stastny at the deadline while in the playoff picture? Why not hang on to him for a playoff push and trade him in June for the same package? Cause it makes no sense, that's why... You trade the player at the deadline or lose him for nothing

- obie

You missed the part where 30 other teams can compete for his services... hence the pay now to get him.

That's right... cuz he has no value.

A few days to maybe sign him does not make a huge difference. Not worth anything crazy.

Sure but he's not interested in playing everywhere else, he's not a car at an auction you just keep bidding on, he has a say in it and we already established that he was interested in Toronto, hypothetically... So, why doesn't this happen every summer? With that theory, there would be no trade deadline at all!

So you would give up the 3rd overall pick + right now for Tavares?

No, but that's not a comparable position.

Right now, at #3, there's no top level C available.

If the Leafs were to trade Matthews, it gives JT the #1 C role. Given the injury history and playoff performance this year, the Leafs may well think it would be a worthy gamble to take. Trading Matthews means they don't need to clear space for his HUGE raise coming up, while maintaining strength at the position. If the Leafs were to try and take on both JT AND Matthews, one of them gets demoted to the 2nd line, which either player may not be fond of.

Clear enough?

Not even close lol

The Leafs trade Mathews for Tavares 15 days before he becomes a UFA and the city will have Dubas' head on a stick!

Let alone claiming that trading him for a player you can just sign in 2 weeks solves the "problem" of having to sign him later...

Here's the thing. If you think teams have had no off the books discussions with him, you're insane. If they make that move, it's because they KNOW JT wants to sign, and they want him locked up for the max 8 years. Now, if was Bergevin, then MAYBE he may make a blind ass dumb trade like that. But that kind of return comes with foreknowledge.

He's only being traded if he has already agreed to sign with his new team

So why is Tavares helping out his former team and cheating the team he's going to out of assets? And how come not all soon to be UFAs get dealt in June?.... Carlson should be able to fetch the 2nd overall right about now!!

Which has happened once in the history of free agency and the return was the 23rd overall pick for both Hartnell and Timmonen

Suprisingly a couple people found that to be logical, as long as Tavares pinky promises he'll sign with Toronto of course... You know, one of those sneaky, kept secret deals that always happen right before the draft!
