stop it with that word. it's like "racism" today. it's lost all meaning thanks to inappropriate application. if you make 50k/year and live within 300 miles of an ocean today, you're "elite" - DoubleDown
Makes me think of Monday night, la belle et le boeuf terrasse and my buddy goes : All that doesn't touch water in the US, should not be allowed to vote !

Wonder what's a few days of negotiating rights' value is - stinger67
To Tavares it means an extra year on his deal if he signs there... The return for the Islanders will probably be a 3rd round pick |

That was my point.
+, I think you can talk with a UFA a little bit before july first. So I rest my case. |

Yup
Only thing it really does, it allows the team trading for his rights to go 1 year longer on his contract... In Tavares' case you're probably looking at 11 million dollars so it's something that could be appealing to him, if he does in fact move! |

The deal would have to be signed with the Islanders for them to get any kind of a return for him... His negotiating rights have very little value |

JT has a list of teams he would sign with.
JT also has demand$$$$
He's got value through the roof right now. |

If a team knows he's interested in signing with them why would they gave them something crazy, like Mathews as you suggested, when they can just sign him in 2 weeks without losing any assets? When was the last time a pending UFA was traded after the season had ended? The last one I can remember is when Gainey grabbed Sundin... And there's the Hartnell/Timmonen trade from NSH to Philly but that's forever ago, the reason it doesn't happen is because no team in their right mind will give you anything of value for a UFA in June |

Why?
Humm
Cuz 30 other teams could bid for him.
That's why.
If JT wants to play in TO and TO wants him, quite sure they would pay the price to get him.
JT is a franchise player and he will fetch a huge reward if/when traded. |

Exactly, Toronto will pay the price on July 1st if he wants to play there... But they won't lose Mathews or anyone else in doing so!
And if what you say is accurate, how come the Blues traded Stastny at the deadline while in the playoff picture? Why not hang on to him for a playoff push and trade him in June for the same package? Cause it makes no sense, that's why... You trade the player at the deadline or lose him for nothing
