I agree. Some don't care for him but, I always liked him and thought he iced some competitive teams in Nashville when he had limited dollars and personnel to work with. - Rota's Rooter
Before last nite, the coach with the most wins without a Cup - he’s 5th in wins in league history.
Now it’s Lindy Ruff (6th). |

On NHL radio yesterday Patrick O'Sullivan said that the Caps have superstar players who are playing like it, and Vegas doesn't. That's the most logical thing I've heard during the Vegas Knights run this year. Of all the teams, the Caps are the last one I would have thought to be the one to solve Vegas. Good on them, they earned it. |

Congrats to the Caps.
I had nothing against VGK, but I got tired of the media/player narrative that they wanted to "prove they belong." They dominated the entire season. Nothing to prove.
I was really impressed with the Caps ability to find the next gear and get to the level above the Knights and put them on their heels--a place they had never been.
Glad the series is over because now the trades can start happening!

What does it say? Basically what we've already been talking about?
https://theathletic.com/3...khawks-offseason-targets/ - SoftServe
The summary - they've got a lot of analysis - anecdotal and statistical thrown in:
1. Talked to Carolina about Faulk/Darling (sorry, no boomeranging fans) - “They’re not making the playoffs unless they do something,” a league source said this week. “They need a defenseman or two for sure.”
“A lot of what I saw from the Hurricanes seemed to be poor risk-taking deployment in front of their goaltenders over the last few years, which resulted in tanked save percentages for every goaltender that appeared in their system during Bill Peters’ tenure. Darling, like the others, tried to do too much to compensate for the team’s system inefficiencies, so a move back to Chicago would require heavy emphasis on re-simplifying his game. But he likes it there, the fans love him, and it could be a forgiving place to bounce back.”
2. Sticking with goalie, Carter Hutton could be a free-agent target for the Blackhawks. Hutton is expected to become an unrestricted free agent.
3. Forward James van Riemsdyk could be a long shot to sign with the Blackhawks due to cap constraints, but the two sides are expected to talk.
4. Ian Cole is another defenseman the Blackhawks could target if he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
5. Tommy Wingels could return to the Blackhawks.

I'm down for a nasto 3rd or 4th line of Martinsen, Hayden and Wingels.
Nice thing is that Wingels can play on any line - so he can slot in anywhere as needed, but I think the above would be cool to see. A true physical/grinder line but with enough skill to generate offense and score. |

So that’s 2 defensemen that Q couldn’t get anything outta them and crushed their confidence that went to other teams and played top pairing minutes and won a Stanley Cup the same year.
There’s something definitely wrong here, again, as we all know here, Stan gets what he thinks the team needs and Q does nothing with it.
I fear the same results for this season as the last, and we’ll see who Q can ruin this time.
Congrats to Kempney!
It’ll be interesting to see what his payday is! |

I like Darling and he played well while he was here. I'm one person that promoted moving Crawford and going with Darling/Raanta back when the Hawks carried 3 goalies. (Glad Crawford proved me wrong about that)
That said, I wonder if he would return to form and play well. Last season he wasn't prepared to play after getting his big contract, which might be worrisome. Also kind of sick of them bringing back players and then having them not work out. Oduya, Sharp, Saad. For 4.15 million I wouldn't take the chance on Darling if it were me. There goalie market has a lot of options that will come cheaper and you can find someone not coming off a terrible season. |

Kane might crack the Caps lineup, maybe...that’s about it. Ovi is more clutch than Toews, a true captain - DarthKane
Really. if Ovie was more clutch than Toews why is this his first cup in years?
He has been chocking the last how many years with stacked teams?

I hope the front office is looking ESPN has us 17 in the power rankings and that is with Teows and Craw having bounce back years. AA, Keith Seabs, Kane are not going to be better next year so if SAAD and Teows add 5 goals each and Craw is at 2.5 GAA instead of 3. that means we win 6-7 more games and are a borderline #8. There are current teams that are just way more talented then us. CAPS, PENS, TB,NASH. and Teams that have young talent that is getting better Like TOR, JETS, BUf, ED, the only untouchable for me is Kane and anybody 25 and younger. BTW there is not way HAbS trade any young talent for Teows. They are worse off then the Hawks.

Vegas didn’t have any superstar players. That was one of the main issues being discussed during the Cup. They were an average team that rode otherworldly goaltending and excellent coaching that included formalized interference all the way the Final. Then the clock struck 12. Sullivan’s “insights” are often illogical. |

After the Hawks disappointing season our family wanted anyone but the Penguins or Predators to win the Cup. Picked Caps to support as we have always respected Ovie although he has never been able to get over the hump. Congrats to Ovie and the Caps. Nice for Trotz too who certainly paid his dues during all those years in Nashville, where he never seemed to have much to work with. |

I agree, I’m happy for Ovi that he finally won a cup and didn’t go down in history as on of the best pure goal scorers to play the game without a cup but they/he could have had multiple cups by now with the teams they’ve had.

Thought it was time to subscribe to The Athletic with the Hawks drafting so high, 2 picks in the 1st rd, last yr being a train wreck and the coach and GM nowhere near being in sync.
Pronmen did an exhaustive ranking of the top 74 players. Kotkanieme 4th, Hughes 5th, Wahlstom 6th, Bokk 8th, Tkachuk 9th, Merkley 10th, Bouchard 17th, Dobson 20th.
Love how he obviously threw out the normal rankings and it reminded me the draft could shake out much much differently than we expect. The 27th is very interesting to me and he has LW Joel Farabee ranked 27th.
USNTDP U18 coach Seth Appert said: “He’s a complete player. He creates a ton of offense without any cheat to his game. He’s a 200-foot player. He’s a great penalty killer and dangerous shorthanded. He’s got the skill level to break you down 1-on-1 and make plays through people. He’s the absolute fiercest competitor.” |

Agreed, which is why despite the huge need for defensemen I think the Hawks draft Wahlstrom if available. A projected difference maker in the offensive zone. |
