Todd Cordell: The New Jersey Devils should not pursue John Carlson in free agency

Todd I understand that you are correct with your overpaid assessment. Averaging 42 points per 82 game season doesn't justify a 7.5-8M deal. That being said, this year was a huge season, and I have watched most of their playoff games, and considered him the best player on the ice. Personally, I would prefer to slightly overpay for a legitamate top D, than trade and give up a 1st rd, prospect, and those affordable entry level contracts. If we were going trade route, Maybe the cash strapped Caps would part with Orlov. He is playing great, 26 yrs old and can skate with the best. Otherwise Dumba might be more than the Wild can afford. Who would you suggest we target?

Caps certainly do not have salary cap issues, especially with the cap rising 4-7 mil next season.

There's really no one this year desperate for space. Kings may want to make some room, Chicago should be safe once Hossa goes on the uniform allergy reserve, maybe the Wild might want to move some salary. That's really about it.

Hawks still need cap relief because you can only be so far over the cap during free agency and players go on the "injured" reserve months later.

The Wild have to resign Dumba and Zucker with minimal space plus the increase, but it's more likely that they ship out somebody else on a medium contract like Foligno, who is expendable, instead of pissing away quality RFAs for unwanted draft pick compensation.

Yeah but the Hawks already have 6 mil in space and if the cap goes up 4 thats 10 million in space. Plus they can be 10% over during the offseason, then bury Hossa later. I think the cap may actually have gone up faster than GMs can give out dumb contracts at this point.

It's good that the league is making more money so players get to make more money. It's just that when the salary cap increases with big jumps you don't get a lot of trades that off season because there is no reason to move things around to get space or address needs. You're just going to see medium players get grossly overpaid by teams which is boring.

Carlson is going to get a big contract and Tavares will get a huge contract, but my guess is James Neal gets the contract that will look the worst in a year or two.

Neal can very well stay in Vegas for cheaper since living is dirt cheap and no income tax there.

He could, but he will be 31 at the start of net season and is staring at his last shot for a big payday.

ummmm.....projected 13M with 10 rostered players slated as ufa/rfa including Grubauer, Wilson, Carlson, Chiasson, Beagle, and Kempny, and a few other lesser contracts will certainly be an issue. I am guessing they let Grubauer walk which may solve their issues. But Burakovsky and Vrana will be up for contract negotiations the following season and are likely to get some raises too.

Vegas can pay all of the guys that they need to resign, just depends on if they actually want to keep them. Signing Neal and Perron to big money deals when you know they're going to get them puts you in a bind for the future. Plus a lot of overachievers on that roster despite bad career totals.

Perron won't be a dime over 3M. He plays low minutes.
