Like Tornado alley. I like when they are talking to those people right after their whole town gets leveled and they just say "we're gonna rebuild". Yeah, that's a good idea.

Worst part is that these people can't even get insurance for a volcanic event. So, your house gets consumed by lava, and you are just poop out of luck.

So with your logic people shouldn't have rebuilt after Sandy either?

Actually no, Sandy is not a frequent occurrence. We don't live in a place that is known to get hit like that. But when your area gets hit by tornadoes on the regular it's a bit different.

Edit: I have also heard some people getting interviewed saying it was their 3rd time going through the ordeal. Really?

Most of those people were born in that area, so you can't blame them. If you bought a summer home there or moved permanently then you are a dumbass, unless you have so much money that you don't give a crap

I get that. But how are some of these people even getting insured? How can they afford to rebuild if it doesn't cover what happened?

I think what you are missing is that many of these people have no choice because of what they CAN'T afford. Rebuilding may be there only option as relocated my be cost prohibitive.

The whole pacific ring is going to blow one day

When you have some time (it's a loooong piece) one day sit down and spend some time reading this. Really makes you thankful you don't live on the West Coast

Insurance ends up not covering damage from so many of those horrible natural disasters. It's the biggest scam on the planet.

There was another New Yorker (I think) article about luxury disaster prepping for the ultra wealthy. That was even more fascinating.

You are 3/4 wrong. Its just like anything else. You get what you pay for. People will do more research for what kind off phone they want then what type of coverage they have on their biggest investment. Most people are dumb.

Well I certainly don't disagree with the bolded.

Federal flood insurance caps out at 250k though. Good luck owning a small house on LI that you paid $475k for that gets flooded out. $100k for personal items. Doesn't cover cost of living expenses while you're homeless, either. But the super-great news is that you can go out and purchase even more insurance, on top of your homeowners/flood, to cover the costs of the damage that the federal insurance doesn't cover.

Anyway, there isn't a chance in hell I'm going down an insurance-conversation rabbit hole...so I will admit that I was wrong.

The whole point is you "chose " to live there. If you don't want the risks, don't live there. No company should have to cover you for everything because you choose to live in a high risk area. There is a reason the NFIP is in billions of debt.
