Because they want and need to get better now. Even if they view a Dman available at #10 very highly, he more than likely won't make an impact before 2.5 years (if ever). Their situation is pretty much where Edmonton was prior to the 2015-16 season: they've been granted the opportunity to add a generational talent to a strong collection of youth and need to get a lot better and do it quickly.

But yeah, all this speculation in the end will resort to nothing honestly. Risto and RoR will stay. They'll draft Dahlin. That already is better than any other option other than a team overpaying for either player.

Ritchie and Fleury are currently NHL regulars and became such in 2 and 3 years respecitvely, Pouliot is a tweener but still reached that level with 2 years, Morin is looking like he's stagnated around year 2 or 3 and Koekkoek looks unlikely to make it any capacity. My point still stands: most players picked in that range who make it do so within 2.5 years. - MaximumBone
Nhlers that are making very little impact. That's not exactly what we need. We either need a homerun with this pick or a NHL ready player acquired for it.
