First, Seguin isn't being traded by Dallas. They just hired a new coach in Jim Montgomery at the Denver University collegiate level, who was thought of as the favorite to replace A.V. with the Rangers, but was never made an offer by GM, Jeff Gorton. That was likely due greater so to him wanting to win right now, (if the word is true that he took the Dallas job due to "liking the words and plan of Stars GM, Jim Nill"), rather than going under a retool mode with the Rangers, in their goal being first to at least getting back into the postseason in 2019. The other reason given was that Montgomery wanted to be closer to home in Colorado.
So Jim Nill must have promised him that the Stars would be spending heavily this summer, and making deals to aid Montgomery to winning very much sooner as opposed to later, as per Gorton's plan in searching for a youth developmental coach as the main purpose. That starts with the Stars needing a steady #1 starting goalie, who can last injury free from the very first Reg. season game through the final postseason one in mid June. So no Tyler Seguin, or a Jamie Benn in stature will be departing Dallas.
