I've said before on the blog, Murphy does better when he remembers he's a defenseman not a forward. One terrible habit he has is to skate forward instead of backward in 50 50 situations. He is undisciplined, first step very slow and struggles with taking angles away when beat.

He's like a corner back in the NFL as soon as they stop back pedaling and running forward more times than not they get burned.

Morrissey with a 2 goal lead last night skated forward on a 50 50 puck lost than took a 2 minute penalty because he knew he was toast. That play reminded me of Murphy and most every other dman on the Hawks team this year

Every D-Man in the NHL can get caught out of position. No D-Man can recover perfectly when caught out of position or flat-footed. Not one. Q and Ulf’s idiotic Offensive Defensive “System” destroyed every Hawks’ D-Man last year regardless of relative skating ability. Forsling, who was acknowledged as a great skater was arguably the D-Man most damaged. Teams like Vegas and Washington and Rockford can play solid defensive hockey because their Coaches have a clue. Kempny didn’t transform into a solid D-Man on his flight to Washington - same player, much better coaching.

His skating is fine. You don’t survive internationally if you can’t skate. You certainly don’t get named Captain and Assistant Captain in succeeding years if you can’t skate. He would have been Captain again if Kane was not there. Also you don’t get drafted high or make the NHL as a very young D-Man either, if you can’t skate. This is true regardless of what NHL team is involved.

Q and Ulf’s ludicrous Defensive “System” destroyed everyone. Forsling who is a great skater was destroyed. Also Bowman and his hockey staff are not morons. In tapping the Coyotes’ line-up not being able to skate would have been a huge red flag. Don’t confuse poor coaching with the D-Men being poor - see: Kempny. Also are you under some delusion that the Vegas D-Man are all magnificent? I’ll fill you in - they’re not, but their Coach certainly is.

Interesting quote from Murphy in latest Athletic article. I know all of the guys, particularly the older ones, have a lot going on outside of the rink, but to not get to know each other before the END of the season. . .?

Powers: Are you looking to build on anything you learned this season in the Blackhawks system?

Murphy: For sure. There’s some defensive play I think I adapted better to over the course of the year. It’s nice to keep playing and try to use some of those things and even learn off what [Jeff] Blashill and what some of the coaches have to say here. Other than that, I think when you skate in the summer and work out you can only grow your game so much and getting in game competition is the best for your development. That’s why I think it means a lot, and that’s why I think it’s really important to keep playing.

Powers: You feel like you learned anything about yourself this season? You got pushed a lot and adapted.

Murphy: Yeah, I did. It was a frustrating time at the beginning of the year not playing much, having a couple games in and out of the lineup and trying to grasp comfort with the team and keep confidence with that. I think that’s what’s hard. When you go through rough times, it’s hard to keep confidence, hard to keep your game at a high level and get it there. That’s something I felt like I was able to do as the year went on. Just I’m definitely in a happier place, gaining confidence with the team and with everyone. We talked a bit at the end of the year with everyone getting to know each other, I think it’ll be a different feeling in the room going into next season with guys stepping in and having more chemistry.

Team sounds sort of dysfunctional doesn’t it? Also seems like Murphy really cares which has always been my reading of him. Thought the same about Kempny. What was gained by Q and Ulf by destroying Murphy’s confidence, Kempny’s confidence, Forsling’s confidence, even Seabrook’s confidence. Seabrook thinks it is simply idiotic to mindlessly pinch and he tries to play safer and he gets sat out for the first time in his ENTIRE CAREER. Makes me even more upset those imbeciles were not fired. Arrogant and dumb is not a good combination.

I don’t think you read that right. Believe he means he was new to the team last season like a lot of guys and that the entire season was a work in progress, getting to know each other and should result in better chemistry for next season...provided Q can keep his finger off the blender buttons.

So Hartman was drafted 30th, Hawks get the 27th pick and a solid young player in Ejdsell...deal is looking pretty good imo.

It looks better by the minute. The potential of trading the 1st round pick along with someone could go a long way to help get this team back into the Big Show

Rinne: "I obviously feel very much responsible for our season ending at this point," said Rinne, who made five saves. "Tough. Tough to swallow. Tough to understand. You know, I can't point on anything. Felt good and no injuries, totally healthy and total ups and downs throughout the playoffs. And obviously, you know, the biggest moment of the season, it's a terrible feeling. You let your teammates down, and that's what happened tonight."

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Rinne experienced the latter. I do feel for the guy. Top goaltender and really classy guy. Hockey is an unforgiving sport of strange bounces and wierd plays that determine games. But in the end the Jets were just better winning 3 of 4 in predville.

BTW is it just me or part of the reason that Seabs and Teows got there big deals and letters was there were some of the best leaders in the game? I'm really starting to the think the only leader ot the young guys is Kane? its one thing to lead with all guys your age. Its another to lead the young guys, Help them with there confidence talk to them about the game. take time in the offseason to work with them. You hear that about kane not at all about Teows and Seabs. Maybe about time you took at least an A from someone and rewarded Kane with it. Anybody else feel that?

I would love to be wrong about this. I'm just not sure he's built to add enough strength to hold up playing center. He played very well as a wing with Toews and Panik (neither one an elite goal scorer), so I think he would still be very productive with Saad and Toews. I would think he would make that line very dangerous with the other two creating a lot of space to make plays.
- Chunk

HMMM......play him again with Toews and Saad huh ??? Possibly the 2 biggest question marks on next year's team. ( Other than CC being #1 )

I have no idea what to expect from Toews because his decline has been ongoing for a couple of years now. As for Saad.......... I am fearful that he might be dealt. The reason being that they have nobody other than Anisimov that can bring back anything of similar value. If he's still here, I hope he rebounds because this past year was terrible for him. Who knows what created that downfall.

They keep talking about BIG changes ?? Who can that possibly be ? All the core have No Trade clauses and I doubt that Schmaltz and ADB would be moved...... so who's left to create these BIG changes ? I just don't see Bowman making significant changes that make them better. We will see.

My $0.02 is is was worn down. All NHL coaches ride the number1 into the ground. Also, his hip may be acting up and he as a classy guy is not using it as an excuse. He is one a few very few preds I feel for. The rest with slewfootban leading the charge can pound it.

Rinne just single handedly cost the Preds a trip to the WCF

Remember when Nashville was a team with a great goalie and solid D, but also very slow and struggled offensively?

Now it seems they score plenty of goals, they skate very well, dominate possession....only to have that once elite goalie let them down when it matters most, with a slew of uncharacteristic defensive breakdowns along the way.

Hartman - 3 healthy scratches (and possibly/probably a fourth last nite if Fisher had been available) - someone besides Q wasn’t thrilled with his play.

Don’t know yet about Ejdsell - perhaps a very good AAAA but not NHL player - and have to see what Bowman does with the 27th pick - and certainly there is Hartman talent possibly available to tap....

Let’s wait a while to evaluate the trade.
