True, but those 2 were not worth the contracts they signed.

How well do you know the Icehogs?
Last night two former Icehogs faced off against their old team. Who are they?
Clue both play same position

Gotovets and Schilling.

I met Gotovets and my buddy played with him at Cornell. Good guy! Nice to see him still in the league.

You touch on something here that I must totally agree with....just about every hockey player I've ever met (most all at the semi-pro level or lower) come across as good guys off the ice. Humble even.

I understand Q new buzzword for the hawks coming into next year is "relentless"...

if that's the case he ought to have the entire team watch the knights playoff games: a team comprised of salary dumps, no salary over 5 mil, half the team with expiring contracts, strategic trades...not saying this is an expansion team of years past, most of these guys had decent resumes...

none the less they play a relentless game no matter the score or time of game

i might be able to think of only 10 games last year were the hawks came close to anything resembling relentless, certainly not from the "core".

Relentless?
I get a similar vibe from the Jets this year, as well. Knights v Jets would be an awesome Conference Final.
Last year's Preds, too.

You can build a good team with an exclusive right to a pool of at least good players (certainly more than other expansion teams) and no legacy contracts to be a drag.

Let’s see how Seattle does - I guess they’re going to come in with similar rules to VGK.

Markus Kruger has two Stanley Cups, is 27 years old and extremely overpaid.

Jordan Martinook has zero Stanley Cups, is 25 years old and is not overpaid.

Both players have one more year on their deals.

Why someone once thought paying Markus Kruger an AAV of $3 million is beyond me, but they did. Good for him. Bad for his career. Since that blunderous contract he has gone from Chicago, to Las Vegas to Waivers, to Carolina to Phoenix. He's gone from a respected contributor on a Cup Winning team to a guy on waivers - all because he's overpaid.

He took a very team friendly $1.5MM one-year deal the year before his current deal - the summer after the third Cup - because the Hawks couldn’t afford to pay him more - with the understanding that the Hawks would make it up the next season.

Averaging the four-year cap hits gets a four-year average cap hit of $2.68MM.

I’ll let everyone figure for themselves if that is or isn’t a good number for Kruger.

And now you know - the REST of the story.

Too high a salary, but the Hawks miss his skill set. Excellent defensive center with a non-stop motor.

Great term, relentless. Agree with your post big time.

I've seen a couple of Knights practices and there is a major difference from what we see around here. The drill starts on one side and the guy who takes the shot is on the weak side when the drill starts with a couple of passes in between. That has to have something to do with how well they move the puck. Emphasis of the drill is quick passing, not shooting. They go tape to tape really well most of the time.

Also sometimes on their PP the guy who carries the puck in goes past the 1/2 board and draws coverage from the opposing D man, then reverses back to the blueline and his PP D man goes low in the zone. That seems to confuse the two PK coverage guys on that side and that confusion creates time and space for the PP.

Kruger was who he was. His contract was ridiculous. It is actually ok to say this while respecting his past contributions. He played a role for the Hawks but many seem to forget what that role was. His role was supposed to be to play down the line-up, check well, kill penalties AND chip in offensively, not a huge amount but something. At the end of his tenure with the Hawks he simply could not score and when I say that I am not talking about low numbers of goals I am talking about zero goals - over a huge number of games.

There are bigger issues at play here. Economically people in general are not entitled to monetary promotion simply because of the passage of time. Also there are limitations to monetary promotion tied to the position. Someone who is a wonderful Walmart Greeter and remains so will not see a huge increase in pay - period. The position has a certain value. However, these general rules also apply to players like Kruger where you know what you are getting, know what his celing is. Kruger was not going to suddenly score 35 goals. The problem with GMs like Bowman is he never makes a decision that a player may actually be worth what he is already being paid or close to that amount or maybe even less.

Kruger’s increase was baseless - the proof was seen by the fact that almost immedietely upon the signing the Hawks wanted to dump the contract because it was a “bad” contract.

It continues. What did Rutta do to justify his new contract. Or Gus?

My $0.02 says it was all about 'Hawk management horribly wrong guessing the salary cap.
That, and in his case, Kruger's injuries which really made his lack of points stand out.
I hope he recovers fully and puts a full NHL career together. He's earned that.
