Just sign John Carlson. By improving our defense we are helping our offense as well.

So...you've basically said they won't go after any of those UFAs, they're keeping their goalie tandem, and losing Moore. What do you foresee their plan for improving?...And for the record I agree about the goalies and Moore, but they have to do something to at least attempt improvement.

I agree with going hard on Carlson. People worry about term and I get it, I'm not suggesting spend recklessly, but eventually some of our contracts come off the books too (Clowe,, Lovejoy, Cammy's remaining 1.6, etc.) so there is money to spend. And let's face it, as much as we all love Hall and Nico and Palms, they aren't Toews, Kane, and Keith--they won't warrant a combined 27 mil between them.

I agree the Devils should stay away from Carlson. But Tavares is probably just a notch below elite-level center. Even if he's 80% of his current self by the end of a contract, that's still a high end player. And generally players of his caliber are still useful into their mid-30's. I also think you're way too optimistic about Zacha and McLeod. In Zacha's case, 21 isn't that young for a prospect and I have lower expectations for McLeod than Zacha at this point.

Carlson is having a nice season, but his career numbers say not to expect that going forward. He's basically Vatanen but on a better pp. He doesn't even handle the toughest assignments on that team (Niskanen and Orlov do).

What would be your suggestion for upgrading the D?

Todd,

You said Devils should stay away from JT and Carlson because we are nowhere ready for cup (you are wrong on that btw) then couple sentences later you say Shero should get as much talent as he can.

You're contradictions make you sound like Tanner.

We handled every top team during regular season, getting JT and a top 2 dman would make us contenders hands down.

Or maybe we should wait until our mediocre talent pool in the minors develops.

Money and if they want to sign here. I’m sure Hynes has worked with Carlson with his time with the US teams.

Ok, easy does it. Disagree with the man all you want but calling him Tanner is just over the line.

Seems like the Devils just can’t seem to catch a break in the draft.. yes we won the draft lottery last season but besides Nico our first round picks have been frustrating Zacha has not turned into the player we hoped and McLoeds ceiling is a 2nd liner... look at the players selected after Zacha that are playing very well in the NHL I guess getting rid of conte didn’t fix the problem

I don't know if I'd say "catch a break." More like they can't seem to get it right.

You’re right they can’t seem to get it right but even a broken clock is right twice a day... what really pisses me off is they picked Bastian in the second round in 2016 when Taylor Raddysh was available that kids going to be an excellent player

Todd do you think Shero will try and extend Butcher when free agency begins?

Well, I mean, Bratt might turn out to be quite a steal. I think we need to give them a little more time. Plus, if i recall correctly, Zacha was a Lou pick. So the jury is still out on Shero.

Zacha was Sheros pick he replaced Lou in May 2015 a month before the draft Lou was still with the team until July

Yeah, I'd like to think it was Lou's staff that did all the homework on that one but I digress.

First, Zacha is not a bust, not sure why everyone thinks that. He was also high on the central scouting list. So its not like they picked a fifth rounder in the first.

Conte was responsible for Zacha. So I mostly blame him.

Take it for what its worth but I have a co worker whose son plays youth hockey with Sykora's son and Bettmans grandson. (I've seen the photos). He actually asked Sykora what he thought of Zacha and Sykora thinks Zacha doesn't have much of a higher ceiling and he is what he is.
